Life during wartime.

We just spent fifteen minutes listening to a barrage of explosions coming from downtown Portland. Nothing visible from where we're at, but very audible. When we went out onto our porch to see if we could see anything, several of our neighbors were doing the same.

The helpful folks of damnportlanders informed us it's the cannon finale to a waterfront symphony performance. A relief to get an answer that quickly, and it's not that it didn't sound like it. But when I was barefoot on the sidewalk, peering westward at the night sky, if one of the planes I'd seen passing by had been dropping things, if there'd been light from the ground that wasn't fireworks or streetlights, part of me would not have been surprised.

With the state of things right now, it's hard for me to picture myself being wholly surprised by that in the future, at least not for any reason beyond someone aiming as small as Portland.
