it hits you again
that jarring cold of the water
sucking the air from your lungs
as you let go
and plunge beneath the waves
at first, the cold shocks you
every bit of your being cries out
fighting against the bitter cold
but it sinks into you
stabbing mercilessly
the cold is unmoved by your heart
chilling your blood, it moves through you
freezing your soul, breaking your bones
the cold has everything you had to give
everything you hadn't given already
and everything you needed to keep
you weep inside, but no tears come
the ice has seen to that
no one may reach you now
you are alone
it’s just you
the dark
and the cold
then, it comes
softly at first
almost forgotten, the need for breath
that deep ache in your breast returns
reminding you of your emptiness
you gasp
but the cold has no breath for you
sinking
sinking
sinking
the bottom is near
but it won't come
the dark robs you of the comfort
the comfort that comes from resting
even the rock bottom is better than this
the warmth you used to feel inside
you can almost touch it
almost feel it again
but it has faded away
lost
lost to the cold
if you look inside
searching for your heart
only a fist of ice
remains to greet you
after everything is taken from you
and you are left to the dark and the cold
they give something unto you
a gift
a gift of unending death
something to keep with you
in the dark
and the cold
the dark won't let you see
and the cold won't let you move
the ice won't leave you breath
and the death won't leave you peace
you are but a ghost
in the dark
and the cold
if you are foolish
you may hold onto hope
"all is not lost
i may yet be saved!"
you sink
waiting
waiting for the rescue
the rescue that has yet to come
the blackness creeps in
but stands off
it knows
your death must never end
and now you realize
that rescue
might never come
in the dark
and the cold
