fires

Nov 01, 2005 16:59

love had found her, before
a brutal taste, violence
that which brings but pain
a tender suffering

but the winds of change
blowing gently o'er her fields
had brought hopes of balming care
after the coming of the fire

looking about her, then
at the burnt-out hulls
of ships long since beached
the prairie seemed at peace

the winds, once raging
had bred the fires high
burning out all the crops
so carefully sown in spring

the sky itself had burned black
and the seas themselves had boiled
till it seemed that the fire itself
was all that it had burned for

after the fires had raged
and there was nothing left to burn
the winds left her, broken
lost, she fell upon the charred ground

knowing nothing but the feel of ashes
all other sense lost to the storm
she lay there, oblivious to all
a fallen soul, laid petrified

the sun came, and the sun went
but never could she see light
through the gloom and haze
of her smoky dark clouds

the moon came, and the moon went
but all the sweet night could lend
is that quiet emptiness that comes
to every heart forever broken

but, in time
as every day brings a new night
and every night a new day
the cloudy skies began to thin

with the past firestorms
now only painful mem'ry
growing colder in their heat
she begins to feel something, again

ah, that quiet hope
the springs forth at the promise
of a new beginning's coming
is there anything more dangerous?

like towers of straw
we set ourselves to fall
each fall further from the last
till the can fall no further

but what if?
what if just once
that fall we prepare ourselves to make
never came?

what if our tower of straw
built upon the ashes of our hearts
were but our pyres built
to release the phoenix to soar?

is there any limit to the heart
that knows the very depth of sorrow?
after knowing the very meaning of sorrow
can we help but find true joy?

sitting there, in her bed of ashes
she looked up, and saw the stars
glittering through the haze
bright and strong and beautiful

a sweet spring rain began then to fall
cool and comforting and cleansing
to wash the soot and tears away
and make room for different tears

with a new day just dawning
and new promises on the wind
she found hope and strength within her
and found her footing, oncemore
at last
