First off, I hate the GRE. Moreover, I hate the ETS for making up the GRE, along with the SATs and other various lame standardized tests.
There is only one reason for these tests. MONEY. Thats right, money. Its an empire that feeds off of expensive fees to take the test, and they keep the US Postal Service in business through the mailing program.
The test does not even measure intellegence. All it does is test your ability to take a test. What in God's name does that mean? Does this test prove once and for all if I can perform "sustained graduate-level" work? No. Not at all.
Applying for History the Quantatative section should be thrown out right off the bat. Vocabulary? Dear God! Do professors write their books without a dictionary handy? No, because nobody's brain can hold that many words or their definitions. The vocab they test is useless. Nobody speaks tha way in real life and few academics use such fancy words unless they are appealing to the smallest of academic communities.
The only section that has merit is the analytical section. That actually make sense because it measures one's ability to read and make use of logic in a good agruement. That is something historians use.
I don't get it. I bust my ass for a good GPA and ruin my social life only to get screwed by the GRE because grad schools look at that and expect a certain score. All it is is me and countless others jumping through hoops that have no bearing on society. Scholars don't even make up test questions, in some cases, not even collage graduates. Who makes them up? Probably some dumb-ass with a degree who thinks they are above grad students and wants to ruin their chances. So you know what? Screw that test and screw ETS.
I jump through enough hoops in life as it is, and this is an expensive time-consuming other one of them. I hope an archangel nukes ETS once and for all.
I am not impressed.
