Week 18: Beep-boop-beep-bleep-doop INSPIRATION COMPUTED.

Mar 12, 2012 15:50

Whew. This entry very nearly did not happen-- not for lack of "inspiration," nor for lack of time spent. I would estimate that the musical "result" of this entry and all the aborted efforts to do other things along the way have taken me something like 20-25 total hours of labor over the span from Friday morning to Monday afternoon. I think my ( Read more... )

This is an amazingly neat take on the prompt for this week! I love the idea, and I think you explained all the technical aspects of it really well. I'm listening to the song now - it's got such a weird sense of urgency to it...

Thank you so much for the prompt- / writing-related compliments! I'm not in love with this as music (knowing the whole time it was going to be very data-sounding... because, uh, it's basically data). But it was so fun to put together... I think I may expand the idea out into some much more musical / less clearly-decodable system at some point.

While I was reading your (very good) entry for the week, I just got your LJ login. Some "cipher guy" I am. Especially since I'm a huge Beefheart fan.

Thanks for the compliment on my entry. :)

And you know, I'm kind of surprised how many people don't get my login. I suppose it's pretty non-intuitive to read it backwards. Else internet it displays as lriG rorriM, and I think the capitalization helps some.

Holy crap! This is the coolest thing ever. How glad am I that I volunteered for this?!

Oh, and I totally failed to send you my word count for this week. Fail sauce. I was too busy posting wrong links at the last minute and possibly getting kicked out of LJI.

You totally cost me my intrapersonal bet. You had established a pattern of comparatively short (usually 500-800 word) entries, followed by a big 400-600 word jump upwards (1000-1400 words), followed by a 200-250 word jump downward from the previous point, then back down again.

This was supposed to be a "slight jump downward" week in the pattern, so based on the info I had, I had anticipated you'd write 763 words +/- 40. Instead, you wrote the longest entry to date by about 600 words, creating a "double jump up" in the pattern.

Now I owe myself $50. Dammit.

Glad you survived, and thanks again for volunteering! I do want to apologize that some of the formatting on your "Baby 2.0" entry probably won't survive the pitch-data-encoding process... I was too lazy to extract the necessary HTML to make the tables work. But everything else should "play" fine on the LJI-"music"-decoding computers of the distant future.

Sorry you lost your bet with yourself! Maybe yourself will let you pay the $50 in installments?

I think this week's crazy topic shook everyone's patterns up a bit. I expected to do something nonfiction-y this week because it's been a little while since I have. But then I didn't feel like writing a "so-and-so inspires me because..." type of post (not that there aren't some good ones of that type, but I wasn't inspired to do it). And then I teamed up with alleyalligator and wrote something totally outside my comfort zone.

I guess we'll see tomorrow night how well that worked out for me, after the scary 10-20 contestant elimination. Eeep!

Thanks, and sorry again that I failed you... temporarily. Hopefully I'll find time / opportunity to extend the promised party just a little.

"Avant-garde machine-fiction has never done terribly well in LJI, to my knowledge."

I laughed out loud. You took what I tried to do and explained exactly why I shouldn't have done it.

(If what I tried to do had involved any complex machinery at all, which it didn't, so I guess not really, but still!)

I just read your entry and, assuming that it also involved some kind of mangling / cut-up process that is currently transparent to me, it does seem a lot better oriented for LJI (if def still somewhat surrealist) than the stuff I was working on with my trusty machine here.

Tell me more about what you were trying to do!

As for complex machinery-- nah, unless you consider PCs complex, which they definitely are, but we forget that altogether these days. You should check out JanusNode. That is the (free!) app I was initially using to analyze input and generate copious output through its Markov-chain facility in the aborted Inspired Entry 1.0. (More on that in a second further down the comments, as promised ( ... )

Oh, and even if you don't go there... @janusnode is all real JanusNode output, and it's one of my favorite Twitter feeds.
