I guess that's kind of my overall complaint about all the therapists I've had so far. I *would* come in and try to set specific goals, time frames, etc. My therapists would rarely try and help me with getting there; they seemed interested in just pushing me back into talktalktalktalktalk mode. And it's nice to talk stuff out sometimes, to have a place to do it. But with the likes of me, it's *not* going to generate results long-term.
As a lay-consumer of therapeutic products, it's never really made clear what kind of therapist you're going to end up with; there's not a clear way to see at a glance what kind of approach a given therapist will take from their Yellow Pages or health-insurance-provider listing. But I've tried an awful lot and the ones I end up with *all* seem mostly interested in talk, not action. My cynical side says it's because such approaches are far more profitable.
LJ has long been a form of talk and sort-of group therapy for me-- as I've said to you before, LJI readers have been the "victims" of the fact that I haven't been able to really use LJ like that for years due to its general tumbleweed state, and thus, prose overflow. But in my defense, I just swapped out a nearly-3000-word entry here for one half its length. :)
The book the Dr. Jeff plans to publish is to help address all these concerns that you talk about. Maybe you could ( if you haven't already) contact him. He is looking for questions to answer for people in helping to find a good fit with a therapist.
