LOL! I hadn't thought of it from that point of view. I've been teaching Ethics to Freshers this term and we had a seminar with lots of examples that are designed to be difficult and testing for certain ethical theories. In order to be so they are quite contrived, though. For instance, the one about the Fat Man In The Cave - guy gets stuck in the mouth of a cave, blocking the exit for all the people behind him and the tide is rising and if they don't act quickly the people stuck behind him will drown. Fortunately (?) someone brought a stick of dynamite along (just for the hell of it). They could use it to blow the fat man up, saving the 19 other people - but should they?

So, it starts off pretty odd, and it gets odder, because people don't want to answer the question, so they keep trying to find ways out of it. It was an amusing seminar, so I blogged about it, and my friends list got real fired up by it to, trying to find ways out of the example. But, of course, the example is set in Philosophy Land, where weird shit happens, and you just have to deal with it. One of my friends commented that Phiosophy Land is a misleading name, 'cause it sounds all dreamy and pleasnt, but it's actually just a place where you have to make a lot of sucky decisions.

This response amused me, and I knew I needed a Philosophy Land icon. What it's in particular reference to is the way people object that if the man could get into the cave, he should be able to get out of it, so I decided that the landscape is viscious in philosophy land, and it closed in on teh fat man as he moved into the cave's entrance...

You probably weren't that interested in the back story of my icon, were you? Sorry, I have never been short of wind...
