Well, I said I'd get around to talking about Penguicon and I guess I will now. Here goes:
The weekend started pretty well. We were a bit slow to get going so we left home about 8 rather than 7 as we had planned. We had to stop to fill up the gas tank before we left and then hit the road.
Around about Muncie, I realized that I couldn't find our mapquest directions so not only did I not have information on where the hotel was, I didn't have information on what the hotel was. We had to stop in Fort Wayne for some necessities and the bank there printed us out the mapquest direction so we were once more on our way.
We did have a nice brunch at a little diner in the Fort that was really cute. Although they had a bus boy that I swear I knew from somewhere but just couldn't place. It was really weird. Then we were back on the road again.
We stopped at the Michigan welcome center to get info for future trips (they have a beer guide to the state microbrews). We also stopped at two wineries to sample their wares and get some beverages for future use. Michigan makes some great wines.
Then we finally made it to the hotel around 3ish. We got our registration and then hung out until we could catch up with
ladyofglass & her beau (S.) and check into the room. We got to meet Randy Milholland pretty much right away and he is so much nicer than his comics would suggest. We made ice cream using Liquid Nitrogen, attended several panels, Opening Ceremonies, the Chocolate Ritual, and a Luke Ski concert before heading out for something to eat around about 11ish.
Now this part of the story was a real adventure. We all piled into our car and figured it wouldn't be that hard to find an all-nite diner of some sort especially since we had S.'s GPS unit. However, we found out later that they haven't updated that information in years as we seemingly passed invisible Denny's. After driving around for quite a while we started heading home and found a place that was exactly what we were looking for. We ate "heap good food" and were laughing so much everyone must have thought we were totally drunk off our asses. They had a strange dessert that was a split blueberry muffin with a scoop of ice cream (I saw someone at another table eating it).
Then we made it back to the hotel and passed out for a few hours of sleep. We awoke the next morning and I had instant oatmeal made with Water Joe (caffeinated water) for breakfast. Their con suite was fantastic and always had some great stuff to nosh on.
We went down to the game room and I ran a very bizarre game of 1,000 Blank White Cards then attended some more panels, and I played in a Call of Cthulhu game and
beldar & I went out for a nice big lunch. Later, I went and changed into something more sexy for the evening and the costume contest.
I pretty much spent the night dancing and drinking at the various room parties. The UNIX club brought an actual wooden Trojan Horse (we were in Troy, MI after all) and they had one of the best parties of them all. I think I may become the official poster girl for the Ohio Linux gathering after lying on the bed with their shirt on top of me and gratuitously groping myself for them (once I find where they posted the video, I'll link to it).
I think I finally fell into bed around 3 or so. Then Sunday we did all of the stuff that you do on the last day of the con (struggled to panels, groaned a lot, and said goodbye to everyone). They did have a showing of "Saving Star Wars" scheduled and I put on my "green jedi" costume for it but the DVD never showed up. However,
beldar & I ran an impromptu panel about the movie and independent filmmaking for those who showed up and had a great time.
We attended Closing Ceremonies and then finally left sometime around 5 or so. One the way home, we stopped at this wonderful German restaurant and had a fantastic dinner. Afterwards we headed straight home only stopping for bathroom breaks and tea. When we finally made it home it was around 11 or so.
We really had a great time and have already preregistered and paid for next year. I honestly can't wait.
As for the rest of my life, things are going well. It would seem that our latest "Would Jesus Discriminate?" campaign
has really scared a lot of people. It seems not only do they feel he would be a bigot but a vandal as well. At least this means we're getting noticed and shaking things up. The church is asking that our supporters please
email Clear Channel in support of the billboards so that they don't have this as an excuse to tear them down.
Beyond that, everything's good. Last night & tonight have been filled with trying to clear stuff off the DVR (it filled up while we were gone).
Oh yeah, I almost forgot, here's the LJ Idol voting button:
,
Remember, please vote for
beldar and
mysticpenguin as well as me. We're having another double elimination and I really need all of the support I can get. Thanks!
Well, I think that's about it for now, I will post later if possible but most likely not until tomorrow.
TTFN!
