Let Me Tell You A Story.

I wasn't going to write anything, yesterday, but then I was doing what I do at work, which is thinking about life, the universe, and everything as I do menial labor. As such, I couldn't help but think about what's happened to my life since 2001, which is when I decided that I had to tell you all a story ( Read more... )

The world was mad before, but sometimes it takes something shake people up to figure it out, whether it be something as life altering and grandly tragic as those events, or something far smaller, far more quiet..

Some of us who were raised to be good little Christians, in that good little Christian country, or elsewhere for that matter, have that moment where suddenly everything changes and there is no going back.

Besides, the Dark Side has cookies and red light sabers, how can you top that? Not easily, I dare say. And there's no pesky "whose deity"/belief or lack thereof is right, there is only the force. Or well, in a non-geeky, non-SW way, just your own brainmeats to try and sort things out. ...at which point one will probably begin to scowl a lot at humanity's penchant for self destructive behavior and going all homicidal over whose invisible friend(s) in the sky are the very bestest. But...there are those times when people get it right, band together and don't lash out, but instead do something good, maybe even something fantastic just because it's the decent thing to do, and give that glimmer of hope that maybe the lot of us will figure it out eventually and make the world better.

There was a line once in episode of Numb3rs that basically summed up how I feel about religion: "Whatever god is, I'm pretty sure it's in how we're there for each other."

I often feel that many religious people out there can't even grasp this concept.

Definitely makes a lot more sense than a lot of what's out there. And probably, I think, what it boils down to. It's there in a lot of the religions and such, but....kinda gets overshadowed by the whole fire and brimstone bits or equivalents or various rituals, etc. Not being jerks to each other, you think that'd get a lot more coverage, but no, not so much.

And just try explaining that there are tales of other deities which pre-date Abrahamic faiths and have pretty striking similarities, especially in the whole Jesus thing. One response being, "But it doesn't pre-date Creation" *headdesk* There. Are. Other. Older. Creations. Myths. ...yargh.

If a certain character from my books were about, many people would get a Gibbs head Slap and she might say, "Forget about deities this, deities that. The important thing, listen up now, just don't be assholes to each other, okay? Play nice, be good to each other, or I will mess you up. Savvy? And no fawning or worship, puny mortals, it will not help your case and will just annoy me." That'd be the PG version.
