avengers: age of ultron thoughts

I do have a detailed write-up of the race (which was AMAZING) in the works, but I saw "Avengers: Age of Ultron" today and I wanted to get my impressions down first. That's the fannish thing to do, right? Overall I liked it, but I had a couple of big problems which I suspect are common problems to have.

Well, someone else said it wasn't because of that at all, ostensibly, but I know how the internet functions.

I've been trying really hard to decide lately if there's such a thing as an actual balanced "line" between not putting up with actual sexist/racist/whatever bullshit and calling someone out on it ... and using that as an excuse to turn into a bully in the name of some noble cause. You might imagine I've actually been considering this for some years, given what happened in our own tiny fandom years ago. I still don't have a good answer.

I just know there are times I think "I don't think you should be picking so hard on that person" followed immediately by "well, if they can't hack it, should they really be writing/producing/doing those things?" And then I go back to "but isn't there any reasonableness and consideration anymore of flawed art still being entertaining/good, and overall a worthwhile piece?" And then tied up in all this is "but tone argument!!111" and "um, Mom always said tone DOES matter if you're trying to get someone to see your POV" and "yeah, but look at the decades/hundreds of years certain people were reasonable and nobody ever listened to them" and ARGGHHH.

If you have it figured out, would you tell me? You're a wise person.
