Orihime stands over him, hands raised, eyes glimmering in her own healing light. She bites her lip in concentration, a habit he’s never really noticed, but finds somewhat adorable.
Despite his injuries and position on the ground, Ichigo feels awkward enough that he has to speak. After all, he came all the way to save her, but unlike with Rukia, he was never quite sure what to say.
“... how’ve you been, Inoue?” he asks quietly, so as not to let Grimmjow hear. The question feels as ridiculous as it sounds. After all, she’s been kidnaped, taken from everyone and everything she knows, of course she’s not doing okay-
“Pretty good, except Ulquiorra never talks, you know,” Orihime starts babbling happily and sunnily, as though he had asked her what crazy concoction she had created for lunch today. “And the food isn’t so great and Ichimaru- Matsumoto-san’s friend- is kinda creepy, and-”
Ichigo coughs, and despite the taste of his own blood in his mouth, he chuckles, shaking his head. “At least you’re still as happy as ever,” he murmurs, and laughs a little louder.
She pauses, and gives him a strange smile.
“What?” he asks, oddly skittish.
“Kurosaki-kun hasn’t laughed like that in a while.” Orihime smiled a little wider, softer, eyes catching the light just so that they were the most beautiful things he’d ever seen. “That makes me happy.”
Ichigo finds he can’t breathe, even after being healed.
He hasn’t asked himself why before, because Inoue was a friend and friends helped each other out (and yeah, Ichigo had kind of a Hero Complex), and all those reasons seemed to make sense at the time.
But now, with Orihime’s beautiful eyes and lovely smile in front of him, he understands.
This is why I came to save her.
