i can't believe i couldn't get anyone to take my extra FREE decemberists ticket for tonight. am i talking to the wrong people or something here? regardless, it was pretty awesome -- for being at the avalon -- which i hate, but still. their set was bookended by their two longest songs, first was the 20-minute "the tain" and last, which really cemented their set for me, was "the mariner's revenge song," here, they busted out the huge paper whale (as seen above) and the guitarist and drummer marched through the audience beating a huge snare drum whilst wearing fake black beards. the rest of the set was basically picaresque, in fact, now that i think about it, they played the disc in it's entirety, minus "of angels and angles" and "from my own true love (lost at sea)." sixteen military wives was loud! also present were leslie anne levine, july! july! and cautionary song, among othersssss. they played for like 2 hours, so yeah, good show.

saturday night was nada surf, in which chris sampson and i endured two marginally ok bands despite their awful names: true love and say hi to you mom. when i say marginally ok, i mean that they were at least tolerable. nada surf played foreverrrrr & basically covered all the ground i could've wanted them to. killian's red (which always wows me for some reason), happy kid, paper boats (trak, would've called you if i had reception, dude), blizzard of '77, fruit fly, inside of love, high speed soul, blonde on blonde (which everyone -- including yeahdudes at the bar -- loved (?). also: 80 windows, hyperspace, and even stalemate from high/low in which they segued off and did joy division oh yeah AND basically all of that new album the weight is a gift. daniel lorca and his blonde dreads and pink button up shirt were entertaining as always. and yeah, good show. minus the fact that it was pouring like crazy out and we were completely soaked upon entering and leaving the venue.

last tuesday was architecure in helsinki but i definitely can't really remember back then.
