The Adventures of producer!Callum in Monte Carlo (interviews, pictures)

Jun 20, 2010 18:08

Running from June 6 to 10, 2010, the Monte Carlo Television Festival celebrated its 50th birthday. Held since 1961, it aims at encouraging the "new" art form of television.

In May there were news that Callum would attend 50th Monte Carlo Television Festival with Camille Sullivan to promote Shattered. Hugh Dillon and Enrico Colantoni were also expected, for Flashpoint - and for Hugh, also for Durham County, being nominated for both. (Hugh didn’t win but Michelle Forbes did win the award for Best Actress in a Drama Series for Durham County)

... the most prolific of series actors: Callum Keith Rennie (currently in 24 and Flashforward and previously in Californication and Battlestar Galactica)...

A Shattered special event was announced for June 7th.

June 6, 2010: arrival

Yesterday, late in the evening (well after the opening ceremony) the heroes of the soon-to-come Shattered have arrived, Keith Rennie Callum (!), together with the star of Spartacus (and also ex Xena), Lucy Lawless.

As usual, they barely arrived at their hotel that they gracefully submitted to an autograph session.

'Shattered' two main actors and the the opening film's director chatted with us.

That is: Keith Rennie Callum (adorable), his partner Camille Sullivan and Barry Levison. The first two came to present Shattered, a cop series featuring a hero suffering from personality disorder, while the director of 'Rain Man' and 'Good Morning Vietnam' presented his movie 'You don’t Know Jack', a film about euthanasia…

PS : Keith Rennie Callum also talked about '24' last season and 'Californication'...

Here’s how the ex-'Californication', ex-'24': Keith Renie Callum (sic) and his partner introduced 'Shattered'.

And it's hard, like, to play the lead of something is...to play the hero...and to play the hero when you haven't had a career of playing the hero that often...it's more non-conforming, or bizarre, or a dark character...it's a bit of a...it's a different...different game.

In my mind I always thought if I was doing a regular role on a television show that I would get bored quite quickly, so this had the opportunity that something bizarre was going to be happening all the time, you know. And so on Shattered I can play the lead detective Ben Sullivan, but, because of his multiple personality disorder....the first season four other alters show up or parts of his character that he doesn't know about.

Red carpet - Shattered presentation in Monaco, by Fabrice Staal

On Monday June 7, Universal presented the European press with its brand new asset: Shattered, with the attendance of the series heroes.

Shattered is the story of a cop suffering from personality disorders. Playing the cop, Callum Keith Rennie, already seen in X-Files 2. The actor and his colleague Camille Sullivan attended the Television Festival to present the new cop series, which is still unknown here but will be aired in November.

"Shattered will air on the 13ème rue channel" explained Leonor Grandsire, President of NBC Universal France. "Belgians are even luckier than the French since they’ll be able to watch the original version via Belgacom TV and VOO on 13th Street in addition to the dubbed version on the French speaking channel."

Discovering Shattered

Yesterday evening, NBC/Universal invited the press to a presentation cocktail to let them discover Shattered, their new series, with the presence of its two stars Callum Keith Rennie (playing Ben Sullivan, the detective with multiple personalities) and Camille Sullivan (playing detective Amy Lynch).

President of NBC/Universal France Leonor Grandsire with Callum Keith Rennie and Camille Sullivan

Callum Keith Rennie plays Detective Ben Sullivan: "In a way it’s a dream job to play a person with multiple personalities, but it’s also a tough job. Moving from one personality to another without losing credibility involves a lot of mental gymnastics, and of course you’re spending a lot of time on the set because the different characters are involved in a lot of scenes."

Camille Sullivan plays Detective Amy Lynch: "For the sake of the series, it’s important that I don’t know or see what’s going on when he’s changing personalities and that is challenging. Sometimes it was the writers who provided the solution, sometimes it was the director and sometimes it was me that found the way to make it work."

June 9, 2010: reception

On June 9, the Festival stars and organizers were invited to a reception given by Monte Carlo state minister Michel Roger.

The new state minister of Monte Carlo gave his first official reception for the Television Festival stars.

The conclusion

This article seems to be a fitting conclusion.

Monte Carlo, mon palmarès (Monte Carlo, my honors list)

Monte Carlo Television Festival is best known for its interviews, which are many, than for its competition, which is of little interest for the public at large, and hardly more for the press. For proof, the "Audience award", delivered to the series which has the widest… audience ratings, and is therefore only the validation of a popular success, without any qualitative consideration… That’s why, rather than trying to judge series, some of them unknown to me, I decided to award exceptional and useless honors to actresses and actors I was able to meet in Monte Carlo.../...

Originality award goes to a guy who is less known, but he’s so rock’n’roll that it would be wrong not to give him an award: Callum Keith Rennie. Seen in Battlestar Galactica, Californication and soon Shattered on 13e Rue here, Canadian Rennie, jetlagged, had something from Serge Gainsbourg - without the alcohol (he quit…), hanging to his cigarette, intense gaze, nice sincerity of the guy who doesn’t care about selling his series and just wants to do a good job on screen. Your loss if you don’t love him, but we (at least, I) do.
