made it to the islands. i would've written a bunch last night, but i felt perpetually woozy on the boat, and reading or anything like that didn't make it better. so instead, i sat around in the lounge a bit, slept quite a lot, and ate and such. the students were in second class, which was a big room with a number of sleeping areas that consisted of a little blanket to lie out on, a horrible "pillow" (it was more like a brick) and a blanket to cover oneself with. my sleep schedule was all fucked up from napping so much that i didn't sleep very much at night. food on the boat was fair; as i've heard, the ramen was not a good idea. i had carried two large bags through the tokyo train system and then onto the boat, so my whole upper body ached, and it still does. yarr.
anyway, after 25.5 hours, we got off in chichijima. we were met by our host and his family. his name is savory, and he's a direct descendant of the guy who got shipwrecked here oh so long ago. after putting our bags down, we were invited to his house for lunch, so we went. and then we got to go to the marine center, where we saw green turtles of all ages, and then a presentation. on the way back, we stopped at a supermarket to get food. came back and worked out an eating system. took awhile to get through, but we did. and then we made spaghetti for dinner. wasn't too bad, actually. after we ate, we wandered around.
we have a weird rooming situation. in this building, there's me, jess, chris and joe, and upstairs are prof. hudson and his son, and lydia and ali. the other four guys are living in a trailer really close to our host's house. they went drinking; we went up a whole lot of stairs to an observation deck and stargazed. and then we went to the beach, which was also pretty. this place, needless to say, is gorgeous. we're on a main street that follows the coast around, but the streets were all but empty at 9:30 pm. boo. so instead we sat around and played hearts.
i thought i wasn't tired, but i'm thoroughly exhausted. 'nite.
