i've decided i'm going to do a movie review of the top films that I had watched the past week. because some of you want me to let you know what movies are good and stuff. so i just thought i'd experiment with this. if you like this idea, just comment or if you think it's stupid, comment telling me that you think it is.
Dreamland; 4/5--This is a coming of age movie starring Agnes Bruckner, Kelli Garner, and Justin Long. I had my doubts about Justin's character because he's usually in dumb-comedies. He did exceptionally well in this though. As i said, it's a movie that focuses on the lives of 2 best friends living in a small trailer park called Dreamland in the middle of a dessert in New Mexico. A new boy moves in and both are instantly attracted to him. Audrey (Bruckner) let's her dying best friend who's an aspiring beauty queen have him despite her feelings. Audrey is a brilliant girl who refuses to leave the trailer park because she feels it's her need to take care of everyone including her widowed father. Anyone who's watched their friend love the person you also have feelings towards could easily relate to this movie. Also, the visual scenery is amazing.
The Departed: 4.5/5--After all the hype, I've finally decided to check this out. I was actually surprised I hadn't seen it earlier. This definitely has the feel of a scorssee film. It also has the feeling of a modern day Goodfellas. Costello (jack nicholson) is one of the biggest crime lords in New York. He pretty much raised Colin Sullivin (matt damon) and got him a job working for the police to give him information on his case. The police has also acquired detective Billy Costigan (leonardo dicaprio) who is being used as a spy for the police about Costello. This will have you guessing as to how it is going to end until the last 3 minutes or so. Once you think it's all resolved, you realize that you're wrong. Although I'm a person who's more into indie filcks than hollywood hits, this was a riveting movie. Also great performances by Mark Wahlberg, martin sheen, and alec baldwin.
The King; 4/5-- This is a dark and disturbing film directed by James marsh staring Gael Garcia Bernal as a navy seal coming home in search of his father. He finds his father who is now the prime example of the american dream. He is the pastor and a thriving church, he has a beautiful home, and a full family. Elvis (Bernal) informs him that he is the son of a prostitute he had been with before he was "saved". Pastor Sandow (William Hurt) orders his family to not go near that man. Elvis then gets into a deep physical relationship with the pastor's daughter who is also his step-sister. His sister doesn't know that they're related which makes the relationship quite disturbing. That's all I'm going to say. I'm afraid of going further because I would give away shocking plot events. This is also a movie where the ending is just so crazy that you'd never expect it. It's a story about a son who'd go to to any lengths to be closer with his father. Also starring Pell James, laura harring, and Paul Dano. Paul Dano was Duane in Little Miss Sunshine by the way.
The Science of Sleep; 3.5/5--Another great film by Gael Garcia Bernal who plays Stephane. I'm pretty sure that this takes place in France as most of the characters speak french along with english and some spanish. This story is about a young adult who's come home to france due to the death of his father. He got a job as a calender maker instead of an artist which he really wanted. He meets his new neighbor who he isn't quite sure if he likes or not. Soon, Stephane loses control of being able to tell dreams from reality an ends up losing focus of what is actually happening. He finds himself happy in his dreams and desperately wants his dreams to come true. From the director of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind, Michael Gondry does another great job by creating a beautiful and dreamy film.
don't forget to let me know if this is a good idea or not.
