Romulans and Vulcans in TOS and Reboot-versefruitcakeofevilAugust 12 2010, 20:40:50 UTC
In the very first season of TOS, the Romulans were already known about, albeit, veguely.
Ballance of Terror, the 14th episode, was the episode where it was discovered that the Romulans were very closesly related to Vulcans.
I can't remember for sure, but I believe it was also hinted at in and after this episode that the Vulcans had surmised that the Romulans were decendants of the Vulcans who left after the ways of Surak had become the new world way of society, and had kept it to themselves until the Enterprise established visual communication with them, and, oh, oops, skeletons leap out of the closet.
The 3rd episode of the third season (episode #57), "The Enterprise Incident", Kirk and Spock sort of go undercover, Kirk get plastic surgery to look like a Romulan, to steal a cloaking device. I believe this is where they tell a little more about some Vulcans leaving the planet after Surak's teachings became the majority rule. I THINK THIS IS WERE YOU LEARN A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT EITHER RIMUS OR ROMULUS AND THEIR HISTORY THROUGH SPOCK'S CONVERSATION WITH THE FEMALE ROMULAN COMMANDER.
The 220th episode of the third season (#77)is "The Savage Curtain", and they mention a little about Surak, and I think, some time referenced to the period when they mention more about the time period. I THINK THIS MIGHT BE A KEY PIECE TO GETTING AN IDEA OF ABOUT WHEN THE ROMULANS MAY HAVE STARTED THEIR SEPARATE EVOLUTION.
Right after that, episode 78 of season three (#78) "All Our Yesterdays", also mentions a little bit about Vulcan history, and a few time or time-period references. THIS MIGHT BE ANOTHER CLUE TO WHEN THE ROMULAN RACE STARTED.
Second season, ep 17 "Immunity Syndrome", an all Vulcan crew are killed by the giant Space Amoeba before the Enterprise finds it. Spock reacts to the moment of their deaths because there were 400 of them "crying out" at the moment they died and therefore, was strong enough to nearly send him to his knees. THEY DON'T FOLLOW WITH THIS WHEN VULCAN IS DESTROYED IN THE REBOOT.
