So this semester I was blessed to Take Revolutions and Revelations - or more plainly Gender in Africa. The class was simple in set up, read and review. So I had a very long reading list come the start of the semester. 13 book and I am currently 134 pages in to the 13th book and I wanted to say a few words on a few of these books.
- First: Purple Hibiscus Details here; is a beautiful story of finding self in a world that is riddled with incongruities. I really think that it brings to life the struggles of families and of the individuals who had to deal with colonization and also the conflict of past and present.
- Second: Things Fall Apart Details here; Another struggle between the past and present but presented to you as a tragedy - of character and a pile of bitter circumstances.
- Third: Nervous Conditions Details here; A story of a young woman coming to age. Her struggles to understand her place in a ‘Englishness’ society but still keeping true to her roots.
- Fourth: ZenZele Details here; A letter from a mother to a daughter; I think this story speak to all of us especially for those of us who find out selves involved in a broader international society. It speaks of worry, praise, fear, and confidence - it contains wisdom and love. I think that every mother and daughter should read it.
So if you’re ever needing a good read, pick them up. They will change how you look at things… they really will.
