I cannot regret what I never had, and so I cannot properly mourn your grandfather with you. Any condolences I could offer, would therefore be shallow and half hearted. But I am your friend and I do know and care about you. I know you are feeling bad right now, and I wish you will get well soon; so that you can remember only the good things about your grandfather and the ways he enriched your life.
My own grandfather and I were not especially close. He spoke perhaps a hundred words to me in his life. He was one of those quiet, serious men, who believe that words are often superfluous to human interaction. But one of the fondest memories from my childhood was the way he would sing, playing on the piano, or his ukulele. He left a series of tape recordings, of gospel hymns and folk music popularized long before I was born, and when I feel low, I sometimes take them out and listen to them, and I remember how I felt and what he still means to me years later.
If I could offer you some measure of comfort, or advice, it is that I hope you have something like that, a memento of his to focus, and remember your own grandfather by. That is my wish for you.
