A bit random, yes, but luckily I do still have Lillyankh's response, copy-pasted in full. Sorry for the late reply! -Cal
"Well, you asked for it. It requires a little explanation first.
In the fic, you know that Mycroft clearly had knowledge of "Project Samhain" and how something terrified him enough to make him delete all the files. Mycroft had actually headed the project. They were experimenting with the idea of mental projections - creating physical nightmares, if you will. One of the things they liked the idea of was Slenderman, because it was a relatively unheard of monster that caused fear in controlled circumstances. They planned on rolling out the fog when they needed Slendy to attack, like a tactical weapon.
To bring Slenderman into being, they needed blood - they used Mycroft's, because he was the most intelligent and the procedure worked with his psyche. But it ... well, to say it went a bit wrong would be a major understatement. The whole point of nightmares is that they cannot be contained. The creature wasn't stable and there was no way to hold it, so it started killing people in the area. It had to follow the rules established by the stories - fog, fire, killing method, that sort of thing, and because it was intangible then it could not be stopped. The one driving factor that the creature had was the desire to be complete, to attain full corporeality, because it was still tied to fog. That's what it was looking for. And then it found Sherlock.
Mycroft's blood brought it into being. Sherlock's body gave it a true form.
When Slenderman found Sherlock, it sort of infected him. Got inside his head. He reacted by "deleting" all memory of the encounter in a desperate attempt to stop Slenderman from using him as a host. When Lestrade tried to get him to remember, Slenderman started to take hold. That's why Sherlock attempted suicide. Saying the name to Sherlock was the final trigger to allow Slenderman in. And now, they have become one, not human, a supernatural creature that is no longer bound by rules and can be summoned simply by thinking about it. The first person it came for was Mycroft, who purged everything and left that warning as it broke into his office.
That work for you?"
