Are there any good movies playing at the moment? I feel compelled to go on a 20-mile bike ride, and the movie theater is my destination.
Movies I've Seen Recently and Didn't Despise:
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
Imagine Star Wars (the originals), Indiana Jones, Dick Tracy, Rocketman, and the Wizard of Oz all wrapped into one movie, and done well. I felt like I was on multiple Disney rides while watching this movie, but in a good way. It really seemed like an old sci-fi movie that was well-made and with better graphics than they ever actually had.
The movie was far better than I initially expected it to be. From the previews, I thought it was a sci-fi movie that tried excrutiatingly hard at achieving revolutionary graphics and failed miserably. But while watching it, I realized that the goal wasn't space-age, shiny graphics like in an Alien movie or the more-recent I, Robot. The intention was to create a particular environment, a certain mood; and Kerry Conran succeeded.
Conran started making the movie in 1994 in his apartment, and spent somewhere between the next four and six years creating the first 10 minutes of the movie using Microsoft Paint. Yes, MS Paint. From what I could tell, the goal was to create a movie with an olden-day sense of wonder, speculating what the future, 1939, would be like from the point-of-view of someone living even earlier than that, and then making a sci-fi movie as it would appear in 1939 if they had really good graphics.
This is how the newer Star Wars movies should have been made.
Warning: This is a family movie, so if you see it in the movie theater, expect many, MANY little, talkative, annoying kids to be surrounding you. I wasn't.
----------------------------------------
Hero Great movie with only a few inconsistencies; also, Tarantino did NOT direct this movie and wasn't involved in any other way; all he did was help bring it to the U.S. and make money off of it. Quentin, stop trying to put your name on it you piece of shit. This movie was good, yours are not.
Taking Lives Actually, this one kind of sucked, but the part depicted in my icon was funny
Seven Finally saw the whole movie; loved it.
The Promise Not a feel-good movie, and yet still good?
Haiku Tunnel Sort of like an indie, oddball Office Space; would see the director's other movie.
Tape Very, very good.
Monument Ave. It was late and I was tired, but I remember it being good. They stole cars, yet didn't glorify it; I didn't have an increased desire to be a criminal after watching it.
Maverick Another late-night movie on TNT, got more than I expected. It wasn't poorly directed, acted or executed, yet it was also funny. Mel Gibson fit the role pretty well.
Eurotrip Average teen comedy; funny at times, but Michelle Trachtenberg was HOT.
