Ok, I've got to give my write-up on Spider-Man 3, and attempt to be spoiler free in the process...it was awesome! Way better than X-Men 3. I am now convinced that Topher Grace can play Eddie Brock...and also, Venom was so fucking sweet! It's hard to believe that Sam Raimi originally didn't want to use Venom, because he's certainly one of the biggest highlights of the movie. They really didn't need Sandman though. It could pretty much have been anyone from the Spider-Man rouges gallery in that role, but they did certainly give Flint Marko a more human side than we generally see in the comics. I know it's been revealed as to what role he has in the movie (but I'm trying to remain as spoiler free as possible) But really any villain that doesn't have the most severe hatred of the Wall Crawler could have taken his place. Additionally, Gwen Stacy's role is also one that could have been occupied by pretty much any girl, but since she's such an important character in the Spidey mythos, I guess that's why she was there. But it really could have been any girl...Betty Brant (Jameson's secretary,) Felicia Hardy (Black Cat,) or someone a little more generic. But it's still nice to see her on screen. And Ron Howard's daughter played the part well.
But I still think that no matter how well they pull off the roles, Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst are terrible for the parts of Peter Parker and Mary Jane. They just don't fit or play the roles as well as they should. I think that Topher Grace would be a much better Spidey if he weren't already Venom (who he was very good as. The way he played it, it really didn't need the buff and more gruff image of him from the comics. Still played a dick either way.) As for Harry Osborn, all of the stuff with him was pretty cool, and really interesting. I'd wondered how things would end up with him.
One thing I will say about the plot of the movie is that it doesn't really feel like it has a significant driven set of course of events...it has the feel of more like everyday life than an actual concrete story. Since there's so much going on in the movie (definitely a lot of elements in varying degrees of importance: Peter and MJ's relationship, Adding Gwen Stacy, Harry still being a part of the love quadrangle as well as his new Golin abilities, Sandman and his part in Peter's past, the symbiote and black suit, Venom, Peter's competition with Eddie Brock...and plenty else (and don't worry, all of this is pretty generic and is pretty obvious if you've seen any of the trailers.) So, in some way's it's good that feels like just a bunch of things occuring in everyday life, since that's what it is for Spider-Man, buy in other ways it's a little less cohesive than I would hae liked. Oh well. Also, the movie was way more brutal and violent that the previous movies. Definitel darker, but then again the comics get pretty dark sometimes..like during The Other story arc where Peter's haunted then beat to death by Morlun, then regenerates into kind of a new body...it's a spider thing, it's hard to explain, but it made Peter more spider-like.
There were a lot of great parts to the movie, but I have to say that the best were the scenes with Stan Lee and Bruce Campbell. There was an applause when both were on screen, especially Stan. And what's great is that he actually had a speaking role, even though he didn't have a specific part (just kind of a random pedestrian,) unlike in Fantastic Four where he played mailman Willie Lumpkin. It was just awesome! And Bruce Campbell is always funny. His scene was so great, I loved the situational humor.
So, yeah in all I really really enjoyed it. The after party was pretty fun too. Mostly just gathering comics, Marvel trivia, drawings for prizes, Guitar Hero 2, and other cool stuff.
And I guess I should also briefly mention that thing that I was talking about in my previous, filtered post (since this one will be public, I'm intentionally not giving details, and would appreciate if anyone has anything to say on the subject to comment on that post instead of this one.) Well, I called Sara while waiting in line for the movie, and she said it's been confirmed. I heard it from her own mouth, and she sounded none to thrilled about it...so...yeah. I'll discuss it with her later today. Right now, I need some sleep. So, I'm out....and go see Spidey 3, it is teh awesome.
