His breath came out in ragged gasps as he ran faster down the alley, but no amount of distance could erase the misery that had come crashing down on him on this chilly November afternoon.
Life as Nick Sanders knew it had changed in the blink of an eye. It wasn’t as if he hadn’t expected this to have happened. In some ways, he was ready for this change, but in others, he wasn’t. Ready or not, there was no turning back now.
At the end of the alley he veered off into a field, trampling down the tall weeds while a horde of grasshoppers leapt in all directions around him, his heart pounding ever harder in his chest. He had to stop soon to catch his breath and think, because what he was about to do required a level head, not running off half-cocked like he was doing now.
Quickly heading up a hill to a crooked old tree, he rested against the rough bark and sucked in air as he glanced around him, sweat dripping down the side of his face. From this vantage point, he had a pretty good view of the rail yard below him, the tops of the freight cars pulling his attention. He set his pack on the ground at his feet, using the bottom of his hoodie to wipe his face and push strands of his sandy blond hair from his forehead.
He had stood here many times before, fascinated by the trains and what they represented to him. A freight train to freedom, just pack it all in and go. Yeah, he’d thought about stealing away for more years than he could remember, wondering if-or maybe, when-he’d ever be driven to this point. Now here he was. This time, not just imagining what it would be like, but carrying out his plan to disappear without a trace.
