Round 1 lines

Jun 24, 2010 22:43

Hereafter follow your choices for the first line of Hobberdy Dick by K.M. Briggs.  As we have three new players, I'll just note that the important thing to put in the answer box is the number of your choice.  If you don't trust yourseld typing in the relevant number, you can cut and paste the line or part of it (along with the number, please).

And without further ado, your choices, arranged in alphabetical order (or as close as my brain can get it), are

1. Hobberdy Dick perched above the front door of Widford Manor, watching a kestrel circle over the moor and resolutely ignoring the shrill complaints emanating from the parlour.

2. Hobberdy Dick stared from the attic window at the three creaking farm carts that were bearing all that was left of the Culvers' possessions out of Widford Manor.

3. Hobberdy Dick was a hobgoblin.

4.  "Hobbledy skip, hobbledy jump, hobbleday run away!"

5.  "Mrs. Whistead, why must we leave?" cried Eleanor.

6.  The house had stood empty for near on a year, yet the windows remained clear, the floors dustless, the beams and chimney-piece free from cobwebs.

7.  The moving of the Culvers away from Widford Manner was most disagreeable to Hobberdy Dick and the arrival of the That Family as he came to refer to them did not improve matters at all.

8.  Widford Manor was two hundred years old, and Hobberdy Dick was older still.

So which is the real first line?  Another note:  if you submit a line and do not vote, then any points you accrue from people guessing your line are forfeited.  Also, negative points for guessing your own line!

Poll The triuth of Hobberdy Dick
I nearly forgot the deadline.  Oops.  Let's say Saturday, 6PM BST.  As I try to have a workday in each voting/writing period, for those who play from work, that means the round 2 guesses will be due Monday, not Sunday.

And...GO!
