Traditionally, Middlemen preferred to see potential apprentices in life-or-death situations before making any kind of job offer.  Nothing could substitute for getting a firsthand look at him (or her, the Middleman amended) under the gun. Now he took a deep breath and waited for the right psychological moment before he stepped in.

I read this a while ago, because I am so very behind on so many LJ things, and I confess I didn't entirely love it. It's obviously well-written, but I'm much more interested in the MM/Dubbie recruitment story, and even then I consider the beginning the least of all their adventures. But then I sat down and thought about The Middleman as we've seen/written him, and then again about that guy kicked out of the Navy without a friend to his name or any meaningful work
