No howling angst, I promise.

Item; husband was out of town all weekend doing FenCon promotion at SoonerCon.  When I mentioned this on the phone to my father (in his 70's and constantly worried) he asked if I was concerned for my safety alone. Actual words of reply - "I have two big dogs and a handgun." I'm not sure how much is pre-feminist upbringing and how much is "my baby is always my baby" but he genuinely seemed worried. My home is my home, whether A Man is there with me or not. He's welcome to protect me if the situation arises but first of all *I* protect myself. (Although when The Man came back home on Sunday, I had no difficulty remembering why I'd missed him...)

Item: The last thing we did before his out of town trip was watch "The Golden Compass," which was great. Our first exposure to the series, so I read the first book over the weekend. I was going along thinking what a faithful adaptation of the book the movie was, right up until they reached the movie's ending and kept going. Not so kid-friendly all of a sudden...

I presume the difference was that instead of ending a kid's film with a horrific cliffhanger, they wanted to put the scary part at the beginning of movie #2. Better for a "here is the problem, now we'll spend the movie solving it" structure.

And golly, a daemon would be fun to have. Compared to those, time-traveling dragons and pretty white horses and smart-assed supernatural cats aren't even in the running.

Item: son aged (almost) six just had his first day of a one-week baseball camp taught by the local high school b-ball coach. He had a great time, apparently behaved acceptably, and already knew some of the kids his age. I'm thinking we'll try to find him some organized sports through the YMCA over the summer. Listening to adult instruction is not really his forte, not to mention hand-eye coordination, so that way we can keep working on them while school's out.

(I realize this will ruin his credibility as he grows up in Fandom -- having Asperger's is optional, but you pretty much HAVE to have been the kid picked last for all the PE teams or risk being escorted out by con security. But if he's got talents and tastes for sports, I'm going to encourage them.)

kid stuff, family life
