Politics - In a different way

Nov 06, 2008 13:01

Since the election results, I've noted multiple hard line Republicans expressing emotions ranging from confusion, outrage, disbelief, fear, and disappointment. Many of these bloggers and Op-Eds speak of how to fight back or get even. Some rare few echo the words of Senator McCain with graceful (if disapppointed) acceptance.

In short, most of these devout partisans are now feeling just like I did after the 2000 & 2004 Elections.

This is not remotely to say that this pleases me. On the contrary, I remember those feelings and that time. I was lost, angry, cynical...okay so not much different from me normally, but I had reason for all those feelings then. And I see all these things coming out in these newly let down Republicans. So many of these people are describing all liberals, Democrats, or other left-leaning group as "the enemy."

And you know what? I DO NOT WANT THIS! I don't want them to feel the loss, repression, oppression, depression, and bunches of other words with 2 S's, that I did. Seriously, I don't want these people to work themselves into a disillusioned hate fury. That's exactly what is happening for some of these folks. If one thing is different about this election and the one from 2000, it's that Obama is not one to forget the other side. This time around those same people can try to voice their opinion (in a constructive way), and know that their ideas will be considered and respected even if they aren't accepted and acted upon.

We can not allow political "sides" to dictate such angry motivation. Direct the anger toward proper and succinct letters to your Senators & Representatives. May your voice heard, by all means and do so often. But don't do it in ways that will create strife, fear, hatred, and even more separation between us as a people.

That's right, damn it. We are a people. We the People!

It's about time we remembered and started acting like it.
