Standing on the bridge of the Enterprise, Commander William T. Riker watched the viewscreen in front of him, eyes trained on the hulking ship heading towards them on a collision course.
"Suggestions?" asked Captain Picard.
"Decompress the main Shuttle Bay," Riker said quickly, "the explosive reaction might kick us out of the way."
"Captain," Data interjected, his fingers moving swiftly over his console, "I recommend we use the tractor beam to alter the other ship's trajectory."
Picard nodded. "Mr. Worf-- Make it so."
Worf nodded gruffly. "Engaging tractor beam..."
Just moments too late, the other ship collided with the Enterprise's starboard nacelle. She began to shake violently, throwing the bridge crew off balance. Riker gripped his arm console. "Damage report!" he demanded.
"Casualty reports coming in from all over the ship," Doctor Crusher responded in alarm.
"The starboard nacelle has sustained a direct impact. We are venting drive plasma," Data said calmly over the din.
"Initializing emergency core shutdown!" LaForge yelled.
"Inertial dampers failing," Ro added, "we're losing altitude control!"
"This is the bridge," Riker spoke shakily into his com link, "All hands to emergency escape pods."
The viewscreen began to shake and spin as the starboard nacelle flared. "The core shutdown was unsucessful," said Data, "We are losing antimatter containment."
"We gotta eject the core!" LaForge interjected.
"The ejection systems are offline," Data continued. "A core breach is imminent."
As the shaking and spinning worsened, Data looked up to Riker, still standing by his console. In the background he heard, "All hands, abandon ship. All hands... abandon..."
The force of the explosion knocked him backward and unconscious.
Will Riker did not immediately open his eyes when he regained consciousness. He was vaguely aware of a pulsing sensation in his head, and the presence of a physical sensation sent him thinking. 'I'm supposed to be dead,' he thought, and his eyes shot open.
If he was dead, he sure was in the right place. Looking around him, he saw palm trees, white sand, people, and lots of women. Frankly, the place looked like Risa would without modern technology. Glancing down at his body he noticed no inconsistencies-- he still wore his regulation Starfleet uniform, his com link, and, strangely, a phaser strapped to his belt. He hadn't remembered equipping a phaser, but, then again, it had been an unusual day.
'I'm supposed to be dead!' he thought again, and pulled himself into a sitting position before attempting to stand. It took a moment (his legs were fatigued) but, standing shortly thereafter, he tapped his communicator. "Riker to Enterprise." He waited for a response. "Enterprise, please respond."
Riker rolled his eyes. "Riker to Picard. Captain, do you read me?" He still heard no response. Shaking his head, he straightened his dusty uniform and began moving slowly and cautiously inland. He put his hand on the butt of his phaser, just in case.
