River woke up feeling terrible. Her head hurt as though she had cried herself to sleep and she had never been more thirsty in her life. She lie still, trying to work out what felt so wrong.
It was quiet. Serenity was still, and there was no engine noise.
More than that, there were no voices. River's mind was as still as the ship.
She'd had an unsettling dream, but she couldn't quite remember it. She was just thirsty and hungry and disoriented.
She moved slowly, eventually making her way outside. She wasn't sure why she felt vaguely surprised to find the ship still on the beach.
She sat down in the sand, basking in the sun with a big bottle of water and several bananas. She was halfway through eating the first one when it hit her.
She remembered where she'd been. It had been a very vivid dream, worse then the usual ones about the Alliance labs or Reavers or Serenity crashing.
She dropped her half eaten banana in the sand; her stomach clenched up and she couldn't finish it. She couldn't get the words her parents had said out of her mind, couldn't stop seeing them leave her behind again.
She sat staring out at the waves, feeling very much alone.
[For crew and anyone who may have missed them. Or anyone who just wants to deal with Emo Girl. Timed for Monday morning because I forgot to post it yesterday. *loses*]
