Roland went directly to the compound with only a brief stop at the wikiup to let Jake and Eddie know that he and Cuthbert had returned. He had stayed away far too long, he knew. He'd let Cuthbert's presence lull him into a state of ease and contentment, and he'd found it too simple to put off returning for one more day, and one more day, and one more day. But at last he'd forced himself to admit that he was hiding from responsibility, he was being a coward--he had forgotten the face of his father. Cuthbert protested and said it wasn't so, but Roland knew the truth. He was a gunslinger, not a puling adolescent, and he'd better act like one.
He needed to find Susan. Find her and cry her pardon.
