The month goes on, and we get closer to the holidays. I bury myself in work, in looking after the girls, in hanging out with my friends, trying to give myself as little time alone as possible. Making sure I don't have too much time to think. To dwell ( Read more... )

The Winchester was one of the few safe havens that Sookie felt she had in full on the new, wintry, and urban version of the island. The place had changed, of course, as much as everything else had. Beautiful wooden molding was set along the perimeter of the room, all of which gave the place more of an aged look, one of another era and time entirely- but unlike so many other places on the island, Sookie felt no hesitation before settling fully in the establishment, and the only explanation was the staff and owner alike. Although she missed the days when she'd been all too aware of the ongoings around the island, waitressing was something that suited her well, kept her aware of the personal events in people's lives and active on her feet. That she'd found a much less limiting dress than most to wear certainly didn't hurt matters. (The lack of sleeves and the ability to see her feet were both pretty crucial, as it turned out, to movement on the floor ( ... )

"Oh, goddamn," says Charlie, hands on her hips above the swell of her skirt as she studies Sookie for a moment. She arches an eyebrow and brushes a curl of red hair back from her face.

"Got you too, huh?"

Sookie wonders how hard it might be to coax a kiss out of Charlie. Not too difficult, she suspects, given how easygoing their relationship is, and how healthy the romance between her and Ianto seems to be going still. She knows that the mistletoe has a tendency to be finnicky, though, requiring anything from a peck on the cheek to full-out tongue, depending on its whim, and hopes desperately that the plant doesn't try to make things too complicated for her- or for anyone at all.

With a fond sigh, she nods, rolling her eyes. "I've been tryin' my best to avoid the stuff whenever I can, but the fact that it's been growing all around town makes it hard. I'm surprised I've made it this long without, actually."

Pursing her lips, Sookie leans an elbow on the counter. "Does this mean I get to beg for a kiss, though?" she smiles.

"With as long as I've been here, I'm halfway convinced that it's sentient, with the way it sneaks up on people," she says, pursing her lips as she studies it. She arches an eyebrow.

"I wouldn't make you beg, sweetheart. It's not such a big thing, is it?"

"You know, I wouldn't be surprised," Sookie considers, thinking about all the times lately she's come across it creeping up on her, sometimes even daring to hide over the bathroom toilet, or just off the side of her bed. "Which is really kinda creepy. I know that normally, it's just by the rec room, but maybe the change of place means that it's not so limited anymore, like it used to be. And it'll chase us all down until we give each other a city-wide case of mono."

Her lips quirk. "But if you don't mind freeing me, no, not such a big thing. Kisses are always fine and welcome between friends. It's the other folks I was worried about resorting to."

"Well, ain't you lucky I'm here?" says Charlie, brightly, smoothing her hands over the skirt of her dark green dress and stepping in. "I reckon my Mister'll ust be sad that he missed out on it."

She winks.

"How you want to go about this, Miss Sookie?"

"That's a good question," she replies, sheepishly ducking slightly and pushing her hair behind an ear. Even if it was just between friends, Sookie still wasn't one particularly accustomed to kissing in front of a bunch of folks she worked with and served practically every day. "Uh... well, I know that most people aren't freed by somethin' as easy as a peck to the cheek, so I guess we try a peck on the lips? Here, I'll walk to the edge so that you don't get stuck with me, in case that doesn't work."

She shuffles over as far as the mistletoe will let her go, feeling as though she's pressed up against a cool wall.

The way Charlie sees it, there's no point in being awkward about it. She's a big girl, after all. She steps in, studies Sookie's face for a moment. Her lips purse and then she leans in and presses a kiss against Sookie's mouth.

She lets it linger for a second, just to make sure.

Sookie can't help it: she giggles. It's not that girls and girls shouldn't be kissing. It's not that Sookie herself is uncomfortable with the idea. But when it's a rare enough thing for her to go kissing men at random like this, lingering and sweet, she just can't help the flush that dusts over her cheeks. With a laugh, her forehead drops to her palm and she manages to step out from under the mistletoe.

"Good kisser and handy mistletoe savior alike," she remarks with a raise of her brow. "I hope Ianto knows how lucky he is."

"Oh, he does," says Charlie, flashing a smile as she holds her hands out to Sookie, a little flush in her own cheeks. "I remind him just about every day, but, you know, he's a smart fella - I'm pretty sure he's got it figured out all on his lonesome."

"Gotta problem?" I ask with a crooked grin, slipping up beside her and resting a hand between her shoulderblades. I know I'm stuck under here with her, now, but it's not like that's a problem.

She's been down lately, and it's not like I've been some kind of ray of fuckin' sunshine. Really all I want is to see her smile.

"Looks like my powers of mind-reading have passed over to you," I greet, smiling as soon as Neil's voice sounds from behind me. Turning around, I drape my arms over his shoulders, expression nothing short of pleased to have him there. I'm not such a prude that I'd mind kissing some other folks at the Winchester, but with Neil, it's always less mess, less fuss. I don't know what it is that we've got exactly, something like friends, but more tightly tied? Family, I guess. Curling a few locks of his hair around my fingers, I glance up.

"Unless you didn't know exactly what you were gettin' yourself into."

"Or I got eyes in my head," I say, my gaze following hers, toward that little clump of leaves and berries overhead.

"I know," I admit, grinning, "Why, you'd rather I was somebody else?"

"Uh-huh," I reply, smile fading a bit as I arch my brow sharply in his direction. Not that I'm at all unhappy with the poke, but he knows as well as anyone could how much my brain's been all twisted in knots lately, and I just don't really know how to easily joke about that. It's taking quite a bit of determination not to stare around and see if Mitchell's around somewhere, actually. Or Mathias. "Yes, I've totally got a whole line of suitors who'd sweep me off my feet, but I suppose I can settle for you."

Leaning up, I press a peck to his nose. Not that it'll do anything, obviously, but sometimes when you're fond of someone, these things happen.

Off that look, I can tell she took that differently than I meant. Sometimes, I guess, I say shit without thinking. It was hard as hell to hurt Wendy's feelings, but even she said that I could be such a fucking guy sometimes.

My hands lifting to frame her face, I tip my chin up just enough to catch her lips with mine, and I even manage not to poke fun at her for calling 'em suitors.

I start giggling through the kiss. I can't help it. I really, really try to do my best to stop, but I'm just giggling all the same, even though I finally manage to pull myself together enough to kiss him back, even making a show of circling his neck with my arm and fanning myself with my free hand.

"Why, Mr. McCormick, I do think you've given me the vapors," I breathe, and although we're definitely nowhere near Louisiana, it's not like Scarlett O'Hara didn't have her share of bustle and skirts, too.
