Adam suspected his own shuddering feeling about someone burning a book had to do with the Circle and with how carefully he and his friends had guarded the secrets of their Books of Shadows but something about seeing the guy feeding pages into the fire set him a little on edge.
Still, he must have reasons, and it wasn't really Adam's place to judge. Judging usually meant judging wrong and after seeing how that prejudice could affect his life firsthand, he wasn't quick to do that without sound reasons.
"Not bad," I say, because, let's face it - the rules...they were pretty much all that got me through Zombieland intact. I believe in those rules. I just...can't live by them forever.
"Definitely not bad. Just...done with, I guess. I'm...uh. I'm moving on."
"I guess the island's a good place to do that. Fresh, clean slate and all that."
Adam hadn't had a lot he wanted to leave behind and, truth be told, he hadn't wanted to leave but he could respect other people wanting to change their situations for the better.
There was a city out there and Adam figured it was big enough to get lost in for a little while if that was what the guy needed but if he needed someone to talk to, well. Adam was more than willing to provide that.
I look at him for a long moment and then I nod. I've spent a long time not really letting anyone except Wichita help me. Maybe it's time to change that.
"I've been carrying that around with me for a long, long time."
"I'm happy to. But if you just need the space and the time to clear your head, I'm happy to give you that too. I don't know what it's about, obviously, but I can tell it's bothering you and I'm not the kind of person who can stand by and do nothing, you know?"
Here's the thing - I don't...uh...I don't really have friends. I have Wichita. I have Sarah. I have Cal...but...I couldn't pretend to understand what's going on there.
I don't have friends.
"I'm...Columbus. And..uh. Yeah. Company would be good. If you really don't mind."
In a weird way, he kind of reminded Adam of one of the Henderson boys: a little off-kilter, but still kind. If he needed a friend right now, Adam could be that friend. Maybe even for longer than just this.
"C'mon," I say, walking towards the door, hands already in my pockets. I suddenly feel the need to get some air.
"I...The place we came from was kind of...really dangerous? Like...end of the world dangerous. That notebook....it's part of the reason I'm still alive."
It sounded like something from a movie but Adam wasn't the kind of guy to judge. His own life seemed a little too extraordinary sometimes too...maybe a movie in and of itself.
"Cardio's really important," I say, sort of sidetracked, hands in my pockets. "People think it's really important to be fast, but, mostly, you've just got to be able to keep going longer than they can."
"Endurance," Adam said, trying to fit that in with the logic of a zombie attack and then realizing, well, considering it was a zombie attack, there was no logic.
Still, he must have reasons, and it wasn't really Adam's place to judge. Judging usually meant judging wrong and after seeing how that prejudice could affect his life firsthand, he wasn't quick to do that without sound reasons.
"Is it that bad a book that you need to burn it?"

I realise that, much as I want rid of it, I can't just sit there and watch it burn. "Uh. I need to get out of here. Sorry."

"Is there something I can do to help?"

"The end of the world, really? What happened?"

It sounds ridiculous.
It didn't feel ridiculous at the time.

"Bathrooms are always a nightmare," I say. "People always forget to be on their guard when they're in the bathroom."
