There were four discarded attempts at what looked like a shark (or quite possibly a dolphin). There was one rather adorable stuffed octopus. There was one baby mobile frame, decorated in blues and greens and coral reds. And there was one sullen teenager sat at a table muttering quite loudly about Stupid Boys and their even stupider girlfriends.

Prior to a few days ago, Valkyrie didn't hate anyone on the island. Then she had actually met Coraline Jones. "Little snot" was probably the kindest phrase she could use to describe the girl. "Horrendous bitch" would have been closer to her actual feelings. So when she saw the blue hair, her first instinct was to just get away. She doubted that she could make the situation worse though, and she had seen how much Coraline's reaction had hurt Percy. And while Percy was well meaning, he was also a stupid boy and probably not up to dealing with early-teen girls.

With a shawl pulled over one of her favorite Victorian outfits she carefully approached the girl, making sure to walk into her line of sight from directly in front of her.

"Hey," she said, rubbing the back of her neck. "Can we talk?"

"Well, I can't exactly say no. Can I?" Coraline said, pointing up at the mistletoe that was holding Coraline hostage. Coraline sighed, scrunching up her face. She wasn't really angry at her but she was still angry at Percy. Percy and his stupid not!Thalia kissing lips. "I'm sorry about before... I thought you were someone else. Someone bad."

"Oh," she said, glancing up at the mistletoe and scrunching up her nose. At least the girl was a captive audience, although she seemed to be calmed down by now and not the huge bitch she had been earlier. Valkyrie just might have to amend her opinion about the girl.

At the mention of her being someone bad though, Valkyrie felt her stomach lurch. What if the girl was from her world, in a future where Darquesse got control?

"Who- who did you think I was?" she asked.

"My Other Mother," Coraline said simply, sighing. "She likes to kill and eat children. She's got cold hands and she's not very happy with me since I chopped off her hand."

"Oh. Well, I don't eat people and I have both hands," he said, holding up both hands. Secretly she was relieved that Coraline wasn't someone from her future. Of course, the fact that she had to go through someone like a mother that eats children was disturbing.

"And is that all? I mean, not that having a mother that eats children and is missing a hand with it out for you isn't bad enough. It's just that... you were really angry even when you saw that's not who I was."

"Of course you don't, you don't have buttons for eyes." Coraline said simply, turning one of the shark-dolphin's in her hand and turning it inside out. "And she's not my mother, she's my Other mother. My mum is normal... well, mostly normal. She's my mum."

Coraline shrugged, she didn't know why she felt so angry at Val. It wasn't like it was really her stupid face fault. "I don't know. I'm not really angry at you, I'm angry at Percy."

Valkyrie decided to just let the whole other mother thing go, since she really didn't understand it and this likely wasn't the time or place to hash it out considering the mood Coraline was in.

"Do you want to talk about it? I mean, I know you've known him way longer than me but I do know he can be stupid. And I promise whatever you say is between us. Unless he deserves to be punched, because then I'll hold him down while you hit him."

"I've known him forever." Coraline said, she didn't understand why she was angry at him though. Just that she was. She didn't want him to leave her too. She didn't want him kissing girls either. "I don't know he's my best friend but he can act so stupid sometimes and then he gets angry at me. Like he knows best but he doesn't."

"Um, you know he's not like... replacing you or anything, right?"

It was a bit of a stretch, but it was the only thing that Valkyrie could really think that she'd be upset about. She was pretty sure that if Skulduggery took on a new partner or something, she'd be super pissed.

"Wait, that came out wrong. He's still going to be your friend. He talks about you all the time. Seriously, ever since I first met him he's talked about you more than anyone else and it's always good stuff. To be honest I kind of hated you for it a little bit and I hadn't even met you. I was jealous of some girl I didn't even know because a guy I like talked about her all the time and is great friends with her."
