McCoy's been settling in with the new status quo as best as he can. It's not like he's totally in love with hurtling even further into the past when he's already coping with losing five hundred centuries of gains in medicine and technology, but he's gonna make do. After what happened in the lab, he figures he's got no right in hell to complain ( Read more... )

Juliet isn't in the habit of coming around to see Leonard when he's working, or at any other time really. They'd had fun together to be sure but things are what they are and she's been somewhat...preoccupied.

Now, though. Well, she's finding herself unsettled again. All the changes to the Island bringing her home only not home and she's been feeling an ache in her chest she's hesitant to dwell on for fear of becoming maudlin. Juliet does not do maudlin. She is, however, willing to indulge herself to the degree of seeking out the company of one of the few people in this new life she might actually considers a friend.

She hears the thud and rushes in only to stop short at the sight of Leonard lying on the floor with a perfectly indignant look on his face. It's nearly impossible for her not to laugh.

"I promise not to breathe a word of this."

His vest is covered in flecks of dust and whatever else he's picked up from the floor and he's already taken off the jacket as the heat of embarrassment flares up and makes his face pink. "Yeah, yeah, laugh all you like," he mutters, pushing himself to his feet and trying to get steady again. "You just gonna stand there or are you gonna help me out?"

"But I was so enjoying the view."

She presses her lips shut to try and minimize her obvious amusement at this particular mishap, though he does like shockingly handsome when he blushes. She wouldn't have guessed that.

"I think I can find my way to being of some assistance, though," she says once he's regained his dignity. Closing the distance between them with a bit of heat in her eyes to accompany the smile.

"Yeah?" McCoy responds, his voice having lowered a couple decibels as he slides his fingers through her hair to keep her all-the-closer to him. His breathing has gone just a touch erratic, but he doesn't really mind. It could be from the fall, but he prefers to think it's due to her presence with him. "How's that?"

It's a shock to her how easy it is, that delicious electricity that runs across her skin when he touches her. She hadn't expected it, hadn't really considered the possibility that something could actually develop between them. But now, well...she finds she wouldn't mind in slightest if it did. This place truly is full of surprises.

She looks up at him through her lashes, pleased at his height, at the fact that she needs to tip her face up to meet his eyes. Such a small thing but it makes her feel feminine and she rests a hand on her back, wrapping the other behind his neck. "You seem to be in a bit of a bind and how could I resist coming to the aid of a gentleman in distress?"

"So, I'm guessing you already know a little about our friend, the mistletoe," he says ruefully, but he slides his fingers over her forearm and holds on lightly, trying to take his mind off the stinging pain that's radiating through his back because of his spill.

"I've heard tell." She may not have a place on the Island, may not have any true responsibilities, but Juliet can't help the lessons of a lifetime and that means always making sure she always knows what's going on around her. It might not be matters of state, but it's almost as vital. Particularly given how little she understand of the whys, and how quickly things can get dangerously out of hand. "But given some of what I've already seen, this seems almost...fun."

Her fingers are playing with the hair at the back of his neck as she bites her lip. Enjoying the flirtation. Hoping to distract him from the pain that she can see by the slight tightness around his eyes. "So am I to understand I need to kiss you to save you from the evil clutches of the mistletoe? Not that I need an excuse, mind."

"You're getting awfully daring accusing it of being evil." Not that he disagrees. Hell, he'll be first in line to agree with her, but it's fun to offer a little give and take and keep this from being too easy for either of them. "But, yeah, that's the general idea. People get trapped under this thing and either they waste away with hunger or they manage to score a little bit of a kiss."

"Yes, it's all fun and games until the bodies start piling up." She finds the whole business disturbing to say the least, but she'd already worked out that while the Island's tricks can be amusing or fantastical they could just as easily be a deadly threat. She'd be a fool to assume anything that happens here is altogether benign. "Still, in this case you should count yourself lucky I decided to stop by. Wouldn't do to have you wasting away."

The feel of his fingertips against her skin are becoming ever more distracting, but she doesn't close the distance completely. Not yet. "So, just a little bit of a kiss then? I think I might be able to find my way to obliging."

"Well, trust me, if I have to get kissed, I'm glad it's you and not some wayward animal too eager to do some licking," he points out wryly, giving her a look that says she ought to just get on with it. "The sooner you kiss me, the sooner I can get these bruises looked after. Normally, I'm all for a little play, but I'm in no state to be playful right back."

"Oh, Leonard. I didn't realize it was that bad, I'm sorry. I'll save the teasing for some other time."

She looks suitably apologetic as she leans in, pressing her lips against his. Not exactly the romantic moment she was hoping for, but she's willing to make allowances for bodily injury.

Before she can get away, he wraps his arm around her neck. He feels a bit bad for snapping, but he doesn't want her to go so quickly. What might've been a light peck of a kiss is something far deeper, now, as he closes his eyes and indulges in the soft kiss shared with someone that he's starting to like more and more by the day.

She lets herself melt a bit against him, pleased that she hadn't been misreading the signals quite so badly. Not to mention that she has the ability to distract him from his pain. More than a little flattering in a way that makes her smile into the kiss, the taste of him both new and slightly familiar. She certainly hadn't been expecting to make this kind of connection, particularly not so quickly, but life is always strange that way. If they can enjoy each others company in the midst of all this uncertainty then she isn't going to question it. She's entitled to something good and uncomplicated every once in a while.

When McCoy's satisfied that she's not about to take his complaining at face value -- and when he knows that he needs to actually breathe -- he eases back with a soft breath and stares at her with the smallest hint of gratitude in the curve of his smile. "My hero," he praises, gently, reaching out to grasp her hand. "Now let's get out of the danger zone before it decides to stick us there again."

"It was my turn," she replies with a smile as she lets him pull her out of the reach of the mistletoe. Impossible to forget how they were first introduced but whatever awkwardness she once felt about that is gone, and she imagines it was likely all one-sided anyway. "Now that the immediate threat has passed should I be rushing you to hospital? How badly are you hurt?"

"It'll just end up being some bruising," he says, performing a quick self-assessment and wincing the whole of the while. It's not something he's going to love, but it's something he can learn to live with over the next little while. "Maybe we ought to get me some ice," he admits, seeing as being a stalwart and noble bastard about this isn't going to get him anywhere.
