December's always hard. The closer she gets to the sixteenth, the harder it gets to breath. Mostly, she misses running. Still, Ianto's enjoyment of the corsetry makes up for it, and she does like the ribbons for her hair. When she sees him, she gathers her skirts and crouches down.
"I don't like shoes," Wolf says and even though he's not happy, he still manages to have a smile for Charlie. "Don't like the snow either, it means I have to wear my shoes all the time and I sure hate wearing shoes. And I don't like these itchy clothes. I miss my shirts and my overalls."
And he misses taking care of the animals. There's less to do now, except he does like the horses and he's glad that they make the cars go instead of the real cars.
"Ah, honey," she says, reaching out to smooth his hair back from his face. She gave him a little smile. "I hate this weather, you know? I miss runnin' like a part of myself."
"I hate it, too," Wolf says firmly, glad that Charlie agrees with him. "Can't do anything we like to do because of all this stupid snow." And he knows that isn't true, he knows there are plenty of things they can still do, but it isn't the same and he likes the island how it was before.
"We'll get running back," says Charlie, with a little smile. "Just you wait. Spring'll come and we'll be runnin' again before you know it." She tilts her head to one side. "Hey - I've got to go pick Cadi up. You wanna come hang out with us?"
"Yeah!" Wolf says, jamming his feet back into his shoes, even though he hates them. There are lots of things he doesn't hate, especially on the island, and one of the things he likes a lot is spending time with Miss Charlie and her baby.
"Where is Cadi?" he asks once he has his shoes tied again.
"She's up at the children's office in the compound," she says. "She's been hanging out with her daddy, but he went to the Hub for a little hwile, so I'm going to go get her and bring her to my studio for a while."
"To draw?" Wolf asks. He's still not very good at it, but he's a lot better than he was before and now that he knows how to hold a pencil -- and crayons and a paint brush even -- he likes it a lot. "Does Cadi draw, too?"
"We can draw if you like," says Charlie, linking her arm through his. "I was going to work on a sculpture, but Cadi loves making pictures. I bet you two could make something beautiful. She could use your help."
Wolf grins at that, wide and cheerful, because he loves the idea of helping Cadi make a picture. "Okay," he agrees happily, although his smile turns a little shy a moment later.
"I like watching you make sculptures," he says, saying the word slowly.
"I bet you can do it," Wolf says with a smile, because he thinks Miss Charlie is capable of making anything. She's so good at sculptures and drawing and that's why Wolf likes learning from her. He doesn't think he'll ever be as good as she is, but it's best to learn from someone who knows what they're doing. Wolf knows that.
"Well, if you've got that kind of faith in me then I'm sure I can do it," says Charlie. She looks down at her hands, swaddled in leather gloves, lined with fur.
"Probably have to get rid of these first, though, huh? Can't do a damn thing with my fingers."
Wolf giggles when Charlie says 'damn', then puts his hand over his mouth to cover it up. "Nope, can't do a damn thing," he agrees and tries not to laugh again. If he laughs, then she'll know he's not supposed to be saying words like that. His mother would have a fit if she heard him.
"What's up, honey?"
