Bilbo Baggins had never been in a city before and, though he had not spent very much time in this one, he felt he could say with some certainty that he did not approve of them one bit. The whole affair was large and loud and crowded and grey and hard and even the Desolation of Smaug could not have prepared him for air that smelled the way it currently did. And the more he moved about the more apparent it became that the city had not been planned with hobbits in mind. He had already been almost struck by two horseless carriages and that was only since going out into the streets that morning.

Now, you or I would no doubt have a much easier time adapting than poor Bilbo, but before you lose patience with him you must remember his size once more. A normal sized adult, or even a good sized child, has no problem whatsoever moving about in the world, but that is because the world is (in the majority of cases) tailored to their height. Think back for a moment or two to when you were a small child and the world was made up of identical trouser legs belonging to distant big people, immeasurable distances to be covered, shop counters too high to be reached, patronizing looks, and countless things that were off limits or dangerous simply because of one's size. Now imagine having to deal with all that while being fifty-one years old into the bargain!

Luckily for Mr. Baggins, he was a hobbit and so made of sterner stuff than most humans. Where any other person in his predicament might have hid under the bedclothes to wait until the world was set back to rights, he set off to explore his surroundings once more with all the grim determination he could muster. Needless to say, there was a great deal of new territory to be explored and the hobbit had a map conveniently tucked into one of his pockets in case he should get too lost. He had also hidden Sting in his clothing much as he had when he wanted it to remain hidden on his adventure. He had no plans of using the small sword, of course, but just the fact that it was there made him feel a bit more secure, much like his ring in his pocket.

[OOC: One pseudo-Victorian hobbit exploring... which is pretty much a normal hobbit actually. Find him anywhere poking around, looking at stuff in shops, and not adjusting too well to the whole steampunk bit. Hobbits don't really do technology. St/lt/all tags/etc.]
