The two of them, they've been in each other's orbit for far too long for Freddie to not be able to read Cook's words and body language for what they are. He can see the edge to them behind all that feigned casualness, can instinctively sense that he himself has somehow misstepped because this is, despite appearances, apparently important to his best friend. He can see, too, that Cook's fishing for a reaction, something angry because he doesn't know how to ask for anything else, doesn't know how to be vulnerable in the light of day.
