Living on a magically beautiful tropical island and having a dragon at his back, it was easy to feel immortal. It was easy to fly up close to the sun, lean forward to grin recklessly at Toothless, and laugh as he unhooked his leg from the pedal. They were so high up that the air almost felt cool, despite the cloudless sky and warm sun, and the wind ( Read more... )

"I am so jealous of you." Cassie said as she approached them. She'd been out for a run and had caught the impressive aerial show. There had been a pang in her stomach as she'd stopped to watch, wishing she could be up there flying with them but she was happy that at least someone still got to fly around here. "That looked like so much fun!"

"It was!" Hiccup admitted, grinning widely and putting the Dragon Manual aside. "It feels like flying. I mean, on my own."

He wondered if it was a little weird to ask but he added, "We could take you up sometime."

"And there is not greater feeling then flying on your own." Cassie said by way of agreement, smiling knowingly.

But her smile faltered for a moment at Hiccup's question. "Really? You...you could do that?" While it wouldn't be the same, flying on a dragon would still be better then nothing and Hiccup could have no idea how much his offer meant to her.

"'Course. You just hang on behind me!" Hiccup explained, pausing when Toothless nudged him in the back with his nose.

"Unless you wanted to try the jumping thing. That might take a little more coordination."

"I'd be willing to do whatever you want just to get up in the air!" Cassie said quickly, unable to hide her excitement at the idea. The last time she'd done anything like flying, other then the island hang gliders, was when she'd jumped off Appa when she'd gone home with Zuko.

She turned and looked at Toothless. "If it's okay with you, since you'd be doing the heavy lifting and all."

Toothless was clearly pleased when Cassie bent and asked permission and gave her shoulder a friendly butt with his nose.

"I think that means yes," Hiccup said, grinning and hefting himself into place, strapping The Dragon Manual into the saddle. "Get up behind me."

Cassie could only laugh and scratch Toothless' nose, pleased that he appreciated her gesture. "Thanks Toothless. And thanks Hiccup. This is...this is wonderful!"

She happily jumped up behind him, taking a moment to place her legs in a comfortable spot and wrap her arms around his waist. "Like this?"

For a second, he could close his eyes and imagine that first flight with Astrid. Toothless must have known exactly what was going through his head because the next thing Hiccup new, he was getting an ear slap to the upper arm. "Yeah, yeah, I got ya, bud," he promised.

"Hang on!" He shouted back at Cassie, leaving her with only a second's warning before they surged skyward.

She could sense that there was a whole conversation going on but Cassie knew better then to ask.

Instead she just gripped Hiccup's waist tighter and whooped with glee once they were airborne.

He didn't worry about Cassie being the kind of person who'd need him to hold back, so he let Toothless climb sharply into the air until the island shrank down far beneath them.

"How's it look?"

"Perfect." Cassie said as looked down. While she wished this was happening under her own power, she couldn't deny how great it was just to be up here.

"Nothing better than flying," Hiccup said, meaning it completely. "Even better if you can do it with friends."

Cassie suddenly thought back to times when Young Justice would go flying together, her and Kon on their own with the others in Bart's super car. She couldn't agree more. "I totally know what you mean. Thank you so much for this Hiccup."

He loved flying, all the time. But his best memories would always have Astrid at his back or with him at the head of a team.

"Anytime."
