Madelyne sighs, fixing her dress and leaning carefully over the cliff's edge as she lets her legs dangle. She's ostensibly there to write, to draw, to scribble out something of meaning to pass yet another lazy island afternoon, but with the roar of the massive waterfall next to her shutting out all else, coherent thoughts aren't coming very ( Read more... )

I saw the papers before I saw the woman. They floated down around my head, and I lifted both brows as I picked them up, then looked up to see where the hell they'd come from.

Offering a smile, I blinked upwards at her, seeing she was sitting above the waterfall. "These yours?" I asked, calling upwards over the crash of rushing water, waving the pages I'd collected.

"I probably wouldn't miss them, but yeah," Madelyne calls back, with a slightly apologetic wave in return. No harm, no foul, she supposes. "Thanks for the assist!" she adds as, reluctantly, she clambers to her feet to start the careful trek back down the path to fetch her discarded belongings, such as they are.

She was a completely gorgeous redhead, now that I could see her a little better, and I couldn't help but smile at her. "Not a problem," I replied, and tried to straighten the papers a little before I gave up. It was basically impossible to do it without a desk or a table or something. Carefully, I walked up to meet her, and tried not to look at the papers--they seemed to be blank, for the most part, though.

"Guess I let my flair for the dramatic get the better of me," Madelyne says with a grin, still a little self-conscious of her actions as she meets up with the other woman. It had been strangely satisfying, though. "Thanks again."

"You dropped something," Cable announced helpfully as he leaned over the edge to watch the papers fall rather than looking at Madelyne directly.

As greetings go it might not have been as popular as 'Hello' but he thought it won points on accuracy.

Madelyne should probably stop being slightly startled whenever Cable shows up, but she hasn't managed it yet and it's not really a big enough concern to question. He's just a startling kind of guy, she figures. "So it would seem," she replies, wry but friendly, raising her hand to shield her eyes from the sun as she looks up at him.

"So then, are we content to litter?" he shot her a questioning look. "Or do you want me to go fetch them for you?"

It depended, he supposed, on what was on the papers.

Madelyne scrunches her face up for a moment at having her actions called out, but it gives way to a smile quickly enough. "Well, I wouldn't try and stop you, but I was perfectly content to go and fetch them myself."

She shrugs.

"Eventually."

Rogue hadn't been avoiding the familiar-faced redhead- she knew Madelyne was around, had seen her around- but it was a minefield, just knowing her, knowing who she was. Rogue had seen how that story turned out, had been there for Nate's birth and for everything that happened after, and the memories were sweet enough until they turned very, very bitter.

Still, when she caught sight of the woman lazing in Rogue's favorite meditation spot, she realized she'd been putting off speaking to her, and that it was cruel of her to, and so she walked over, hands shoved deep in the pockets of her cut offs.

"Heya, Madelyne."

"Rogue, hi," Madelyne replies, trying not to look too surprised at being addressed, though she at least has the relative remoteness of the location to fall back on as an excuse. It hasn't been easy, knowing a fair few people on the island and having the only one to not act completely bizarre around her be an Xavier who's unaware of most of them himself. Rachel gets an obvious pass, and she's chalked the rest of it up to awkwardness over the large time discrepancies she shares with most of them and gone merrily on her way, but Rogue's arrival quickly reveals the flaw in that approach.

The X-Men had been all she'd had for a time, the only people who'd been there for her when even her own husband had failed her. She's missed them, the girls in particular, and maybe she should be thankful that Betsy and Alison aren't around to ignore her as well.

"Nice day, huh?"

Rogue walked over and sat, looping her arms around her knees.

"It's a good one. Few days more'n it'll probably be snowin'. Season's change with all the subtlety of a Juggernaut through a wall, 'round here." She pushed her hair behind her ears, realized she was looking at her toes, then made herself look up at Madelyne Prior.

"...Maddy, 'm sorry," she said, blurted out, really.

"It's been- It's just been so long since - saw you, 'n I'm- 'm so different. I guess I just haven't known how to... Try 'n talk to you. But I should have," she said.

"Tried. So I'm- 'm sorry."

"Wh- no, hey, I get it, it's fine," Madelyne says, shaking her head minutely. She doesn't get it in the slightest, not really, but the sentiment is at least a genuine one. She can't pretend away all of her resentment, however buried, but it's a complicated situation all around and she can respect that. "Things move fast for you guys, I can't even imagine how much might have changed in a few years. I almost don't want to. Apology accepted."

He doesn't know why he's there, but then, he doesn't know why he goes most places these days. The past couple of weeks or so, Elvis hasn't been fit for much more than just going through the motions, and even that takes more effort than it ought to. He's got to do something, though, mostly because there's an inherent danger in letting himself get apathetic enough not to, and so he wanders, eventually in the direction of the waterfall. At least it's quiet up here - inasmuch as anything can be, with the consistent rush of water - far more so than the more frequently populated pool at its base. Company isn't something he generally sees fit to seek out.

He finds it anyway, approaching just in time to see the papers go tumbling off the edge of the falls, eyebrows raising. He shouldn't ask, shouldn't even wonder, but curiosity gets the better of him anyway. "What were those?"

"Just some papers," Madelyne replies, biting her lip. What this guy must think of her after that, she has no idea, and she looks over at him with a slightly self-effacing smile. "I'm... not sure why I just did that, really."

"Hey, whatever works," Elvis says, shoulders lifting in a shrug. It's weird, but if she wants to go tossing papers off waterfalls, it isn't his place to stop her. Comparatively speaking, around here, it isn't especially weird at all. "Think I might be more concerned if you did have a reason."

"I guess that makes sense," Madelyne agrees, tapping her pencil idly against the wooden board still sitting in her lap. Being a bit bored obviously beats getting that upset over whatever she might have put to paper, after all. "I guess I should probably go clean up after myself, huh?"
