"That applies to you as my protege and not just as my boyfriend, Will," Helen clarified, wanting him to be certain that she'd valued him and thought he made her a better woman long before they were together the way they were now. "And I still think the word boyfriend is patently ridiculous for people of our age but there you have it."

That earned him a little smile, dimple flashing, and a blush. "But boyfriend, I suppose, is the best word. Paramour, maybe. Lover? I could go on in about fifteen different languages, if you'd like."

"Do you think husband is a ridiculous word?" It wasn't the way he'd meant to phrase it, but it was just how it came out, so he went with it.

After finding some papers related to his father's fraud conviction, Will is motivated to make his relationship with Magnus more permanent. To his surprise, she says yes.

Kate thinks about teasing him, but in the end she just smiles her way through a little shrug. "Wouldn't miss it for anything." For people like her and Will, kids from broken homes, the streets, foster care, getting married's kind of...well, scary as fuck and also the best thing ever. Family of his own, for real.

She leans over and kisses his cheek lightly. "Besides, someone's got to give away the groom and I'm the only one qualified to do it." Because of the thing they never talk about.

For a second, when she kissed his cheek, Will thought about that thing they don't talk about, that other life Magnus told him about. It wasn't so much about any might-have-beens or could-have-happeneds so much as was about knowing they would always, always have each other's backs. "You can absolutely do that," he said, draping his arm over her shoulder and squeezing.

Will goes to tell Kate his big news and tell her what prompted it.
