It's been a belief he's held true his whole life - that the devil will find work for idle hands. He can't say he's ever been a pious man, not ever soft in a religious sort of way. He couldn't ever bear the sermons that Book would try to pass, on Haven or off it, but he also knows that he's seen the devil, from time to time, in human form and he doesn't hold with laziness. It all feels too much like the world catching up with him.

And he's always wanted to keep moving. Ever since Serenity Valley, he's craved perpetual motion.
The island brings stillness. It's not always easy to stomach.

Zoe helps. She keeps him moving. Controlled chaos, in a tiny body and, sometimes, he finds himself looking for himself in his features, trying to pin down his island history. He's always known how to follow maps and charts. He turns amateur cartographer and tries to follow her back.

Today, though, they're both quiet and they're both still. He's finding something to do with idle hands. A long time ago, on a world that doesn't exist anymore, not in any real, tangible way that has anything to do with the heart in him, he learned to work with wood, make little, useful things to please his mother.

Today, though.
Today, he's making a horse. Zoe sits in the shade, sleepy and content, and watches him.

Together, they keep the devil at bay.

ooc: find Mal carving under a tree close to the compound. Excellent time to meet him. St/LT welcome.
