River was still a bit shellshocked from last week's stuffed animal attacks, but she was doing her best to get back to normal. This was much easier said than done, when neither River nor Zoe was sleeping well, they couldn't have bananas on board Serenity without upsetting the baby, and, perhaps even worse, the wing kept coming off the one plush toy ( Read more... )

Mathias isn't looking for anything in particular. For the most part, he's just wandering, walking aimlessly through the market because he can count on there being people around. It's easier to people watch in a place like this, which makes it too easy for him to think.

Killer vines, killer toys. They're both ridiculous and yet the damage has been done. He's been having trouble sleeping again, though part of it is due to watching Sam, who distrusts her toys now and who seems angry at him some days.

"Hello, River," he says when he sees her. There are too many things going through his head right now and it's easier, maybe, to talk to someone instead of thinking too hard.

River had already ascertained for herself, several times, that Mathias as well as Samantha had emerged from the attacks undamaged, but she still liked seeing him out and about and at least attempting to have a normal day, just like she was.

"Ni hao," she said, her smile a real one even if it was still a bit tense. "You wouldn't know who might be able to fix Niao, would you?"

She held out the bird and his detached wing, well aware of how pitiful it looked.

Mathias can't help but smile at that, looking down at the stuffed bird. There are many things he can do, many things he can build with his hands, but he isn't sure he knows anything about sewing. If she wants him to, though, he'll try.

"I've never tried to sew before," he admits. But there are many things he's never tried before that he thinks he might be alright at if he were to try them. "Have you tried?"

"I did, but I can't seem to do it in a way that makes it stay attached. Every time it falls apart Zoe gets upset again. I'm hoping to find a professional."

She hadn't really expected it to be so easy as to have the first person she asked be the one best equipped to help.

"I just want something to be fixed, after what happened. I hate that Zoe's so scared now."

Kurt... liked River Tam. A lot. The opinion wasn't one that he simply held out of a fondness for Summer Glau, either; yes, he agreed with what seemed to be a majority of regular television watchers that Firefly certainly deserved more than the few episodes it'd been granted, back in the day, but on the island, Kurt had a million more reasons to be fond of the young woman. He had, after all, signed up for practically any dance class that stood a chance of helping him significantly on stage. The discipline of ballet, coupled with the fluidity of jazz, plus tap added on for that last strike of pizazz. And, as far as he was concerned, River was certainly an instructor both kind and learned. More than he could have hoped for.

Which was why he immediately regretted the face he made at the battered toy in her hand, one which was a rather heavy cringe, at best.

"Oh dear," he breathed. "Are we looking to prevent a casualty?"

"That's the plan, River answered with a sigh. "Poor Niao here didn't do anything to anybody, but a giant stuffed banana tried to rip him apart anyway."

Sometimes, she heard the words coming out of her mouth, describing perfectly valid and true events in her life, and was struck by how insane they sounded. She pressed on anyway.

"You wouldn't know how to reattach a wing to the innocent bystander of an unprovoked attack, would you?"

River liked all of her students, and, as was often the case with people she knew to be dedicated to one particular set of skills, like Kurt was with performing, she had hope that they were also in possession of other talents.

It was as though River had decided to read from a storybook, and Kurt found that he couldn't keep the smile from his face as he listened to her in full. Of course, he had born witness to the horrors of animated stuffed animals and other various toys won as prizes during carnival week, but somehow in the aftermath, everything seemed more distant. Less real. (Admittedly, the fact that Kurt had very quickly found himself a safehouse after the activity started probably helped to that end; he'd sustained no injuries at all on Halloween, and he was planning to keep that streak up, should anything else choose to occur.)

Fortunately, he broke himself out of the reverie soon enough, directing his gaze at the torn wing, considering the remaining cloth and how well it could be used to patch things up without too much of an obvious change.

"You're in luck, Ms. Tam," he declared. "I happen to be in advanced sewing. Been tailoring my outfits for years now; a wing shouldn't be a problem."

River beamed. She hadn't really expected it to be quite so easy to find someone capable of fixing her baby's toy, but she wasn't one to be unappreciative of good fortune whenever she might come across it.

"Really? Sewing must be a really useful skill to have. I've never really gotten around to learning it, but I'm glad you're willing to share your talent. Zoe will appreciate it, too."
