Zoe had liked the carnival a lot, while it had been around. She'd got to ride in circles on wooden animals for hours, and had come home with a good number of interesting stuffed animals. Her favorite, the one that had made her laugh from the moment she'd seen it until her Daddy won it for her, was the giant banana. It looked like it was partially peeled, with a face underneath and the peel forming arms, and it was so silly to talk to a banana that was smiling at her that it didn't seem like Zoe was ever going to get tired of it. She sat on a blanket on the beach near Serenity, her all-time favorite stuffed friend, the plush parrot Niao that she'd had since she was just a baby, in her lap, surrounded by large stuffed animals like bears and unicorns and turtles that she hadn't yet given as much attention as the banana, which she jabbered at endlessly even if it took it a while to respond.

At first, it was just the expression on its face that moved, from wide smile to something more menacing. Then its arms starting moving, and at first Zoe giggled, delighted. It wasn't until it tried to tear Niao away from her, ripping off his wing in a burst of stuffing that made her go quiet in horror, that she was afraid. "Bad Nana!" She kicked at it, to get it away from her, but the banana kept coming, trying to bite her while its hands grabbed at her hair.

River was nearby, brushing Simon Chicago, untangling leaves and who knew all what else from his fur. She was grumbling about whatever it was he got up to when he went off on his own when the screaming started. She dropped the brush and both she and the dog rushed toward Zoe, even though neither of them quite understood exactly what was happening. It looked like all those stuffed animals were moving, and hurting Zoe, and that could not be allowed.
