Karen has no idea what to be for Halloween. She's sitting cross-legged in front of the clothes box, surrounded by piles of Disney Princess costumes and fairy-wings. But she doesn't want to be a Disney Princess or a fairy. Those things are fine when you're a little girl, but Karen's nine, now. She wants to feel more grown-up. Sometimes, she sits on the steps of the compound and watches the women come and go, with their lovely clothes and their shoes and their pretty hair. She's got her hair-straighteners, but Rollie's terrible at pony-tails, let alone getting her hair to lie properly straight.

Karen sighs and roots through the box again.

Really, what Karen wants to be is older. She wants to be grown-up and wear make-up and have a boyfriend. Stuff like that. Grown up stuff. Instead, she's got ShorHor who's half-way through eating a net skirt...she's got Garm, who's sleeping with his head on a pile of shoes. Everything is slightly glittery.

It's pretty. For a moment, Karen gets distracted by a gauzy green skirt. She runs her fingers along an embroidered hemline.
The next thing she pulls out of the box is a tiara. After a moment's hesitation, she puts it on.

Maybe a Disney princess wouldn't be so bad, after all.
Just for one more year.
