Bilbo did not like to be impolite when he could help it, but as time wore on he found himself getting dangerously close to losing all sense of propriety. Of course it wasn't his fault though. It was just that the man had been staring at him quite openly for some time now. It might not have been so very bothering if the man had simply happened to say something, but no reply was forthcoming. Bilbo supposed he ought to have been used to it by then, after all, quite a few people tended to stare at him on the island, it was one of the more uncomfortable disadvantages to being the island's only hobbit in residence. But this! This went quite beyond staring and became just plain rude.
"I beg your pardon," he finally said, casting an indignant look upwards. Much to Bilbo's annoyance the man did not even have the good grace to look the slightest bit embarrassed by his own behaviour. "I beg your pardon!" His voice was beginning to raise, but then he was beginning to be rather more annoyed.
"And here I was spending all this time thinking I was the ornamental dwarf in this circus show." The man shook his head in a bemused fashion, but (Bilbo most certainly noted) he did not apologize.
"I'm not a dwarf."
"What?"
"I'm not a dwarf," Bilbo clarified once more. "I am a hobbit. There is a difference you know."
"I didn't actually," the man said with a shrug. All told, he seemed far less impressed with that piece of information than the hobbit in question would have liked, but there was something about his manner that made it seem as though he was more interested than he let on. "Is that anything like a dwarf?"
"No."
"How about a pygmy?"
"I... I don't know actually."
The man was silent for a moment, thinking. "And you're absolutely certain you're not a dwarf?"
"Yes!"
This was going to be quite the trying day at this rate.
