The last two months have been hard on Maxxie. In little ways, and in big ways, but nothing that he wants to complain about. He turned into a girl, and that was weird, but it's about the only thing that centers directly on him. (That involved Claire, too, but nothing Maxxie did hurt her by it.) But he fucked a guy he shouldn't have twice, kissed a ( Read more... )

It's not uncommon for Olive to take a detour and go wandering instead of heading home from school. She's finished her classes for the day, and when so much of it today has required her to be on her toes intellectually, it's nice just to walk and clear her mind. She likes being pushed, she loves that the teachers here are smart and engaging and give her that push, but she likes this, too, the quiet and calm.

It's broken by a song that sounds vaguely familiar, but which she couldn't put a name to if she tried, and when she heads in its direction, though she didn't think who it was, it comes as hardly any surprise at all to find Maxxie there. "That's beautiful."

The last note's a killer, not that it's especially hard to hit but it's especially long and loud. So Maxxie falls forward in an exaggerated pose of exhaustion, fingers touching his toes and tongue sticking out of his mouth, before he straightens up and greets Olive.

"Thanks," he says. Though the slight breathless quality to his voice isn't put on, it's leaving quick enough. "I haven't been on a stage since I got here. I think I got carried away."

"Well, I think that's what it's for," Olive says, heading over to pull herself onto the edge of the stage. There's nothing wrong with getting carried away at times, as far as she's concerned, and Maxxie's more talented at these things than she is anyway. "I've been out here, but I've never done that. I've pretty much drawn the line at karaoke."

"There's nothing wrong with drawing the line at karaoke. More people should," he says with an emphatic arch of his brows. "I'm sure you're great though."

With Olive headed over, Maxxie moves forward, clambering down to sit on the edge of the stage himself. "I don't suppose you would be interested in trying?" he asks. An innocent face is mostly wasted on him, but he tries anyway. "Maybe, hypothetically, in theory, someone could convince you to try out for a musical?"

Olive sits with her mouth open for a moment, letting out a soft laugh. "Um... hypothetically, in theory, I'm listening," she says. "I think everyone would be happier if I stayed in the audience or back stage, but..." She kind of likes the idea of the spotlight, she can't pretend otherwise. Back home, she mostly stayed out of it, but that doesn't mean she didn't crave the attention and appreciate theater at the same time. Maybe something in the chorus would work. "Are you putting on a show?"

Maxxie nods, accepting her answer with a considering look, lips pressed together. "Dunno," he says, throwing in a shrug for good measure. "Maybe? It wouldn't be a bad idea, would it? I mean we've got a stage. We've got talent. It's been done before. I think I might convince Alcuin to put on a dance recital, but... more theater never hurt anybody, right?"

"I think it's a great idea," Olive says quickly. She may doubt her own acting skills, but she's sure of that. There were a lot of local theater festivals in Ojai, and she's been to all kinds of productions of varying quality, albeit more plays than musicals. She can't see how it wouldn't be worth doing here. "I bet there are tons of people dying for something like that to - to be a part of or just come out and see. I'd love to be involved one way or another."

"Oh, you may live to regret those words," Maxxie promises with a devious little grin. He relents quickly though, raising his hands in an unnecessary show of no harm. "But we'll see. I make no plans or promises. It works out pretty well for me that way. But enough about my boredom. How's yours?"

It's not boredom that troubles Olive, who manages to keep herself busy enough most days. She shakes her head with a smile, rolling her eyes at herself. "Yeah, no, I'm fine," she says. "Boredom is not - keeping up with schoolwork is more the problem. What was I thinking?"

Maxxie laughs unabashedly at that, shaking his head. "I don't know. I don't know what anyone's thinking taking real courses around here." But that's Maxxie: different priorities than everyone else. Boys and dance and the stage. The only thing he's fully agreed on with everyone else has been drugs. Not that the differences have really gotten in the way.

"How could anyone want to study when there's beaches and guys and random magic powers?"

"Yeah, but I have all of that, too," Olive points out. "And I like school, I like studying, I just... oh, my God, I'm insane. I'm taking Biophysics. Who takes Biophysics on an island? And it's not like I have a choice now, I have to keep up, because there are only two people in the class because only Jessica is as crazy as me. But just because my teacher's Spider-Man doesn't mean I'm passing on the beaches and powers and guys. Guy."

He bursts out laughing again, unable to help himself, but he manages to give Olive something like a sympathetic look. Poor girl. “I still think you’re mad,” he chuckles, “even if you’re not as far gone as I thought. Seriously, Biophysics?” He shakes his head. “Spider-Man would be a reason for me not to take it. I couldn’t handle letting down a superhero.”
