It's been weeks now since she's found out about her biological son and Gwen's still reeling. Investigating Kate Freelander's string of thefts helped to keep the worst of it at bay because she was busy but now, with nothing to do, her idle mind wanders to that little boy more often than Gwen likes. She doesn't feel any pull to be a parent. That's probably good - Nate has parents.
She's glad the Doctor told her, though, just as glad as she is that Rob kept it from her when she first showed. Neither makes it easier and that's why she can't sleep and she's taking it out on the beaches of Tabula Rasa in an ill-advised sprint. The sand slips and slides beneath her shoes and doesn't give her the traction she needs for this to be a relaxing run and that's a good thing too: she doesn't want to relax.
After pushing herself for a while, she stops, clutches her side where a side stitch has set in and tries to catch her breath. Maybe it'll get easier someday and maybe it'll stop hurting but for now, this physical pain's more than a bit welcome while she works out her mental state.
It's a distraction, at least, and that's always welcome.
