If the situation weren't so grave, Sarah might welcome the dawn of another dismal day with a bemused laugh. Last week, she privately began chemotherapy after putting it off for too long and for the first few days, it was tolerable. After that, it became a flood of familiar symptoms and if she hadn't known any better, she might have thought she were ( Read more... )

"You know, I've had women faint at the mere sight of me," Hank began, approaching her with a mixture of genuine concern and mild apprehension, "but I've never had one puke."

Maybe Ashby spiked more than just the vodka at the morning's breakfast.

"There's always a first," she says in a deadpan, though it's less that he disgusts her (that much, at least) and more that her stomach is in a constant state of tumultuous disagreement with the rest of her. "I'm fine," she lies, because it might come true one of these times if she just says it enough.

"Yeah, you look it," Hank replied dryly, coming to a stop in front of her. "At least you're safe in the knowledge that I didn't impregnate you upon first sight." Not that Hank couldn't have before the vasectomy. He was pretty damn sure his swimmers used to be Olympic athletes before they were put into retirement. "So this ain't morning sickness, unless you've been cheating on me."

Hank spoke a lot of nonsense sometimes but he knew it. Right now, he was hoping it was a successful distraction for her.

The glare that she's been perfecting comes back in style as she glowers at him at the mere mention of him knocking her up. "What the hell are you talking about?" she gets out with a heavy amount of exhaustion in her voice. "I'm not seeing you. I'm not seeing anyone!"

"Ah, so you are single then," Hank grinned, giving her an appraising look. Even if she did look a bit pale and sweaty. "Is it contagious?"

If it was, Hank would probably catch it since he was standing so close.

"Unless you've managed to discover a new strain, I'm pretty sure this one's all mine," she replies, unable to help the slightly acidic echo in her tone. She wants to punch him, if she's honest, but she's too damn tired. She'll have to take a raincheck. "Just -- go, leave me alone. There's a dozen other pretty girls out there, go be harassing to one of them."

"Ooh, nice. Complimented yourself there. I like it," Hank winked. He always had an admiration for others, like himself, who had the ability to recognize their own animal magnetism. "Let me be a gentleman and help you. Need me to hold your hair back while you barf?"

"Do you deliberately ignore things that you don't want to hear?" Sarah wonders aloud, an incredulous look on her face. In combination with how she feels, she's wondering if the world isn't playing a joke on her and everything is really screwed up -- so screwed up that she doesn't know where to turn.

"What?" Hank enunciated like a dumb mute, tugging on his earlobe as if he couldn't hear. "Was that a yes on the barfing?"

Sarah gives him a dubious look. "You," she announces, barely able to get it out before the disgust kicks in, "are not what I need right now." How is it that she tends to attract the most infuriating of men into her life, is what she'd like to know? It's genuinely a puzzle to her.

"But I am the only one you've got right this second," Hank replied, slipping seamlessly into a sincere manner. He wasn't blind. He could see she was ill and that it wasn't just some kind of common cold.

He turned to stand beside her and offered her his elbow. "Take it. My feet are killing me," he lied, "I wanna sit down."

Sarah sighs, as if wanting to make it clear to him that she's long-suffering in this, but then she does take his elbow. It's appreciated, but she'll be damned if she admits how much she appreciates it. "Okay. Lead the way," she says wearily.

Lead he does, walking at a pace that made it seem like he was the one that was dawdling.

"You got plans for dinner?" he asked, glancing over at her. "Because my diary is wide open tonight."

"What makes you think I want to eat dinner with you?" she asks, arching one eyebrow primly upwards while giving him a bemused look. It's the best she can do while she feels like this, struggling to just walk in a straight line. "Maybe I just want to go home? Not with you in tow."
