Danny is fairly sure that even though he put Kate in holding for destruction of property a couple weeks ago, he should be allowed one free pass -- just the one. He's been looking for clothes in order to replace the ones of Steve's that didn't make it through the fire (that Danny set) and for the most part he's picking out the things Steve likes and ( Read more... )

"You know, I didn't realize you took fashion so fuckin' seriously," I say, kneeling down beside him and picking up one of the shirts. They're just fuckin' clothes, I've never really understood why people get so goddamn bent out of shape of this thing.

Still, when I turn the shirt around to read it, my lips twitch at the corners. "Marry, huh? Do they? Really?"

"Okay, okay, screw you," Danny accuses, without much heat to the words. "That's my personal business, it doesn't belong on a goddamn t-shirt that looks like it'd fit very miniscule dogs instead of people." He tries to start stuffing them back into the box to be swallowed up by the depths of clothes hell, but he knows that probably just means they'll return thricefold.

"Dude, don't even act like you wear a size that much bigger than this," I laugh, holding the shirt up in his direction, and sure, he's strong and he's got broad enough shoulders, but he's kind of a little guy.

"Whatever. Personal business or not, somebody must be a fan."

"You're quickly earning a ticket off my wedding guest list," he huffs, as if that's actually any kind of real threat and not just some hilarious thing he's saying. He holds it up with mild disgust and flicks it aside, digging out the next one and flicking it in Neil's direction. "Here, have one for the road."

I don't get it, not at first, and I'm half ready to throw it back, but the forger and the darling in tiny print at the bottom is a little too familiar.

Coughing out a laugh, I say, "I think I know one of these guys."

"Seriously?" Danny says, distracted away from his own grand pain and suffering for long enough to afford a sympathetic smile with a pained and awkward-sounding chuckle. "Man, maybe I should take that back, then, on behalf of that guy. No one deserves a shirt like this."

"No fuckin' way. I'm keepin' it," I laugh, holding tighter to the shirt before he can try and steal it away.

I dunno if I'd ever actually wear it around him, if I'd want to fuck with him like that, knowing how uncertain he is that this place is even real, but it's too funny to just get rid of.

"So, is there seriously a weddin', or are you just full of shit?"

Danny takes a minute to readjust, but when he does, Neil gets his full attention. He waves a hand idly in the air as he keeps searching through the box, taking a moment to hold his left hand still so Neil can see the plain gold band. "Possessive bastard slipped it on me months back. So, yeah, I'm getting hitched again. We'll see if this one lasts longer than the last. I mean, if not, we are due for some epic fireworks, let me reassure you of that."

"Seems like everybody's gettin' married," I say with a crooked smile. I guess it's always been that way, here. People pair off, quick as they can. Guess they find it comforting, in a place like this.

"That's great, man."

"Trust me when I say that I'm -- I'm definitely not sure about this one yet. Not that I don't love him, you know? It's just marriage." He's still wary of it, especially after Rachel. "Last time I got married, I was blissfully happy. Right up until I got served with divorce papers. It's --" He trails off, glancing over his shoulder like he expects to find Steve there. "I keep expecting him to do the same."

"Nothin's guaranteed, you know? I mean, that's kinda the point, I guess. It's a leap of faith," I shrug, "I mean, my first, Logan? We were... fuckin' awful for each other. I don't even know what the hell I was thinkin', but Mike and Tom and me? It was right. If they hadn't... Well, you know," I say, rubbing a hand across the back of my neck.

"I think it's a risk worth takin'. Not that I plan on ever doin' it again," I admit with a huff of laughter.

"I loved Rachel. I did, I do," Danny admits, knowing that this is part of why this is all so raw. "She just couldn't take me being a cop. And you know, sometimes i think Steve is okay with it, but there are times when there's this look of panic on his face. Man, you should've seen the guy when you, me, and Mattie-boy went on that trip and I had a good fall."

"He'll deal with it. I'm just sayin', man... It's a risk. Always is. Think it's a good one, sometimes, though," I shrug, offering him a faint smile.

"But don't just do it for him, you know? Do it 'cause you want to."

Danny shrugs, a stupid grin coming over his face and he feels like an idiot for looking so much like one, but hey, what's a guy to do? "Why'd you get married? I mean, the second time around," he prompts. "What was the driving force, the thing that made you know that, yeah, this is right."

"I dunno, man. I'm not real sure it's something I can explain. Was kind of a gut feelin', beyond knowin' I wanted to spend my life with both of 'em. Or, as much of it as this fuckin' place ever lets us," I say, my lips bunching up in a faint smile. "With the girls, it also kinda felt important, makin' it official."

"Yeah," Danny says fondly, thinking of those girls. "Hey, no, I get that. I'm a big fan of doing things officially for the kids. I am like, SuperDad if you get me going, happily. I just -- I love kids," he says quietly. "And I miss mine like hell."
