Edward knew horses. At least she knew them from the books she'd read. Horses were for riding far and far away and right now that's what Edward wanted to do. Ride far. Go exploring. Stop being stuck at Faye-Faye's or the Compound where there were people that keep looking after her and worrying about her breaking her other arm. And she wanted to GO. ( Read more... )

Felicity had gone to the barn to get some more cleaning supplies, looking just in time to see Edward..was she actually calling out to the bull?

She usually didn't really pay much attention to Edward: sure, she was eccentric, but she was otherwise harmless.

Seeing her like that Felicity wondered if she wasn't just eccentric, but mad to boot.

"Edward? What on earth are you doing?"

"Edward needs a ride." She looked back at the other girl, trying to place the name/face. She knew she knew her, but didn't bother to think about it long. Ed had more important things to do.

"Ed doesn't have the horse-things, so Ed wants to ride the cow. But the cow is tall and Edward is not, so Ed needs the cow by the fence." Struck by inspiration, she pauses and looks at the girl. "Does the girl-person know how to get the cow-thing to move?"

The girl was mad, there was no other way to put it.

"That's not a cow, Edward!" She said, nearly dropping her supplies. "That's a bull, and they get mad very easily. If you try to ride him, he'll only try to toss you off and then try to stomp you."

That may or may've not been an exageration, but she knew bulls were very aggressive and may not take too well to Ed's way of movement.

"Anyway, you can't ride cows either. They're not very fast unless startled and you'll only be thrown off if you do manage to get one to move."

She said all this very quickly, not sure if the threat of the Bull would be enough: maybe Edward would listen to reason if she explained.

"Cows get angry?"

Edward didn't understand that. They were big and slow and looked pretty dumb from what she saw. Not that Edward knew anything about animals. Except for Ein, but he wasn't a normal dog and didn't do normal animal things. Cows and chickens and birds and boars were all strangers to her.

But the cow just didn't look angry to her.

"But Ed needs a ride."

"Bulls get angry," she corrected. "Cows are female, bulls are male-you're trying to approach a bull, you can see by the horns." Horns that she hoped wouldn't turn on either of them

She almost breathed a sigh of relief. A ride she could handle, a very injured girl (with a broken arm to boot) she couldn't.

"I can teach you to ride. I have a horse, Penny, and I'm a skilled rider myself-so long as in the future you ask permission, I can teach you how to ride a horse. They're much faster than cows."

Just as dangerous as a bull though, they may not have horns, but a well placed kick or stomp from a horse could easily break a human bone. Falling from a horse wasn't a fun experience either if the rider wasn't prepared.

"You have a horse?"

That had Edward's interest. The idea of a horse had appealed to Ed, but she didn't have the things. If the girl-person does...

"Ed wants a ride!"

Felicity nodded.

"Her name's Penny, I was just on my way there actually." She didn't get her supplies from the ground just yet. "She's by the stable. I'll let you ride with me, but only if you come out of the bull pen and make no sudden movements."

Who knew what would set the bull off?

"Okay!"

Completely forgetting the part about sudden movements, not that Ed had ever been subtle about the way she stormed through life, she ran for the fence. With a jump and a one-handed clamber she climbed the fence (only teetering once) and dropped down by the other girl.

"Ed can go now, right?"

Felicity found herself holding her breath, praying that the bull didn't see Edward as a threat: a broken arm was bad enough, but a broken back was worse.

She didn't realize she was holding her breath until she landed infront of her.

"We can go, I was on my way anyway." She collected her things.

"How far is it?"

Shifting on from one foot to another, Edward's impatience shone through. Waiting... really wasn't her strong suit, not in her hacking, not in her playing, in fact the only thing she had patience with was her chess.

Chess she could play for a week straight - and had.

"Will it take long to get there?"

And Felicity thought she was impatient-Edward almost made her look like a monk..or a saint.

"Not at all. She's right by the stables, or so that's where I left her." If she was taking Penny with her for only a short while, she rarely tied her up. "I only ment to get somethings to clean the stable with."

"Are you going to make Ed clean?"

Edward didn't like cleaning. She did it when she had to, but her clutter was comfortable, like the junkyard she'd lived in with the Sister. Having things around was good, things were like homes sometimes.

And sometimes they weren't.

"Ed just wants to ride."

"You can't properly ride horses without understanding them, and a good way to do that is to spend time with them."

She handed her a bucket with a curry comb inside. "Cleaning around the stable isn't pleasent, but it helps the horse get used to you. Penny doesn't care for strangers riding her, and if she doesn't want you to ride her, then she won't let you."

"Besides, it'll get done faster with two people."

Edward stopped and stared, thinking she'd been tricked. This was work, Edward didn't want to work, she was looking for ways to play. Looking at the bucket in her good hand, she frowned, unsure what to do.

"But Ed doesn't want to work." Simply stating it seemed to be best.
