This wasn't how it was supposed to be.
It wasn't that the people weren't nice. They were more than nice, they were friendly in a strange not-quite-Pleasantville sort of way. It was everything that Mystic Falls had claimed to be, except without the stuff that was lurking under the surface. There was stuff there, Caroline was certain of it, but she didn't know quite what it was.
The funny thing was, she simply wanted to call it nice and leave it at that.
A shower had helped, as had a change of clothes. Sure the cut offs had that strange glitter-covered thing going for them which she would normally pass on, but they had been the best things that she had found so far. The people she'd met had said that it would take some getting used to, that the box was like a habit that would come with practice. It was definitely the weirdest thing that she had ever encountered and that was saying something.
Seated on the grass just outside the Compound, she watched people come and go. There was a mug, half-filled with cooling coffee next to her as she sat just at the line where the shade ended and the sun began. This was the furthest that she had ventured since she had arrived. It was the first time that she was outside in the daylight.
She had been told that this place made things better. Took away the odd things, but she couldn't bring herself to believe it. Not until she tested it.
Sliding her ring off her finger, she set it down in the grass. A series of deep breathes as she steeled herself before slowly reaching a hand out towards the light. The tips of her fingers hit the light first, until her entire hand was in the light. Nothing happened. Not a sear of pain, not a hint of burning. Nothing.
"Oh my god," Caroline yelped in surprise, pulling her hand back as she jumped to her feet. A grin was spread across her face as she hopped up and down, totally oblivious to the fact that she had knocked her coffee over. "Oh my god! Oh my God."
Maybe this place really wasn't so bad. Maybe it was just as good as she had hoped.
